TL;DR:

  • The Batman is officially a hit coming in at number one at the box office three weeks in a row.
  • Prior to his turn as the Caped Crusader, Robert Pattinson joked that he would turn to porn if The Batman bombed.
  • Even though the movie is a hit, Pattinson is still joking about his back up plan — “never say never.”

Robert Pattinson’s The Batman just hit number one at the box office for the third week in a row. At the same time, the gritty superhero adventure crossed the $300 million mark in North America. These numbers have made The Batman the most successful theatrical release of 2022, so far. This success also means that star Pattinson won’t have to turn to porn.

‘The Batman’ is helping the theater industry post-pandemic

The Batman hasn’t had much competition in March — a month relatively light with new releases. But the film is holding strong week-to-week, giving life to the theater industry in the post-pandemic era.

In its third weekend, the Matt Reeves-directed film earned $36.8 million from 4,302 theaters nationwide, which was just a 45 percent decline from the previous weekend. Those ticket sales pushed the film past the $300 million mark, according to Variety. Making it just the second film post-pandemic to reach that total after Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Internationally, the Warner Bros. film added $49.1 million in ticket sales from 76 overseas markets during its third weekend. Even with China closing nearly half of its theaters due to COVID cases, the film managed to earn $12.1 million in that country. Which brings the overall box office total for The Batman to $598 million so far, against a budget of $200 million.

The box office totals mean Robert Pattinson won’t have to turn to porn

The Batman marked Pattinson’s return to the world of blockbusters after a decade-long foray into indie films post-Twilight Saga. When his casting as the Caped Crusader was first announced in 2019, it was met with a lot of backlash.

At the time, Pattinson joked that he had a backup plan, just in case his take on the superhero caused the franchise to take a major nosedive.

According to We Got This Covered, Pattinson revealed that he would probably turn to porn if The Batman was a box office failure — though not your typical erotica.

“Porn. But art-house porn,” Pattinson joked.

‘The Batman’ star still isn’t ruling out porn, despite the film’s success

While promoting The Batman with his co-star Zoe Kravitz (Selena Kyle/Catwoman), Pattinson recalled his porn comment and laughed about it before adding “never say never.”

“That [comment] was a long time ago, before I even started shooting [The Batman],” Pattinson told Kravitz. “But you know, never say never. I’d be more likely to do it if [The Batman] is successful. Cause that makes more sense…a celebratory porno.”

Obviously, Pattinson is joking about a possible turn in the adult entertainment industry. But, he does have a history of pleasuring himself repeatedly on the big screen. Including 2019’s The Lighthouse, where he pleasured himself while thinking about a mermaid figure

“I keep masturbating,” Pattinson said, per Men’s Health. “In the last three or four movies, I’ve got a masturbation scene. I did it in High Life. I did it in Damsel. And The Devil All the Time. I only realized when I did it the fourth time [in The Lighthouse]. But when I saw the clay figure of the mermaid, if you’re getting turned on by that, you’re in a very strange place in your life.”

The Batman is now playing in theaters nationwide.
