She’s sent shockwaves through Weatherfield since her return, and now Sue Devaney has spoken about why her character Debbie Webster is helping Ray Crosby (Mark Frost) to destroy Coronation Street.

The actress appeared on ITV’s This Morning today, speaking to presenters Ruth Langsford and Eamonn Holmes about her return to the soap.

Debbie’s new storyline sees her in cahoots with Ray, scheming to destroy the whole street by buying everything up – but Sue believes her character is acting in good faith, and thinks Debbie is trying to make positive changes for Weatherfield.

She added that Debbie is ‘trying to make Weatherfield a better place to live,’ but admitted that she’s ‘hurting a lot of people’ in the process.

‘I call her demolition Debbie,’ she added. ‘She’s a business woman. She made a fortune in Turkey.’

Sue said that Debbie believes Weatherfield is due a ‘a little revamp’, adding: ‘I think Debbie feels it would benefit the community’.

Debbie is looking to buy up all the properties on the cobbles, and currently trying to convince Sally Metcalfe (Sally Dynevor) to sell No. 4.

Sue also spoke about returning to the show after 35 years away, having first appeared as Debbie as a teenager in the mid-80s.

‘It was absolutely amazing’ to be back,’ she said. ‘Check that hairstyle out!’ she added, looking back at her performance on the show as a 16-year-old.

Sue said she feels ‘very lucky’ to be asked to return, adding that it was good to be back with her ‘mates’ on the show.

Coronation Street continues tonight at 7.30pm on ITV.
