  • CITV hosts Stephen Mulhern and Danielle Nicholls were the ultimate pairing in the early noughties.

However when the hosts eventually stepped back from the show they headed down two different routes with Danielle presenting for various TV shows – including TalkTV – while Stephen stayed put with ITV.

Stephen is now a regular ITV favourite hosting the likes of Catchphrase and regularly joining in on Ant and Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway.

And as Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly step back from the ITV show, it could be the prime time for Stephen and Danielle to reunite on air.

Now a source has said: "Its understood that Danielle and Stephen have remained close friends for many years. He is Godparent to two of Danielle’s children.

"It’s also known that Danielle has recently been in ‘conversations’ with some high up executives at ITV."

The source added: "ITV have wanted to put them back together, but they just said it was a case of 'right job, right place, right time."

Elsewhere, Danielle spoke on BBC Radio and host Anna Jameson asked her: "Can we reunite Stephen Mulhern and Danielle Nicholls please?"

Danielle said she was "manifesting" the reunion and said she sent him a text cheekily asking when her screen test was.

It seems the CITV star is certainly interested enough in a reunion and Stephen, having worked on Saturday Night Takeaway for many years alongside Ant and Dec, would be a great addition to the show.

Ant and Dec confirmed they would not be returning for another series earlier this week.

A statement from the pair saw Ant say they love making the show but after 20 series they felt it was the "perfect time to pause for a little while and catch our breath".

Dec added: "We still have a momentous 20th series to look forward to first so we will do our best to go out (for now) with a bang in 2024!"

Kevin Lygo, ITV's Managing Director, said: "Over 20 series the show has become a cultural phenomenon, and while we eagerly anticipate what Ant & Dec have up their sleeves for the 2024 series.

"We completely understand their desire to take a pause, take stock, and think about what the next incarnation of the show might look like."
