Riverdale fans have believed that Archie Andrews (played by KJ Apa) and Betty Cooper (Lili Reinhart) were always meant to be ever since their first appearance together in season one of The CW series. However, as their respective relationships away from one another blossomed, viewers were sure that it would never happen. However, after a few brief affairs, showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa has teased that the romance between them isn’t over yet and will play a major part in season five’s conclusion.

Riverdale is the adapted teen drama from The CW that sees a new spin on the popular Archie comics.

The show shocked fans when the fifth season featured a seven-year time jump.

Archie and Betty are a couple in the comics but the former has been with Veronica Lodge (Camila Mendes) since season one.

However, the new season showed the two were estranged and Archie briefly rekindled his romance with Betty.

Fans have noted the romantic chemistry between Archie and Betty in the past but the latter’s relationship with Jughead Jones (Cole Sprouse) quickly became a staple of the series.

After their brief relationship was over, Archie realised that he really did love Veronica and tried to get her back, despite her being married and living in New York.

However, showrunner Aguirre-Sacasa has teased that it may not be over for Archie and Betty just yet.

He told TVLine recently: “Betty and Archie’s story isn’t over yet.

“Their relationship does deepen, especially as we enter the last stretch of episodes,” he added.

He joked that their relationship originally began as just a “booty call” but has now developed into something more meaningful.

The showrunner’s assurance that more Archie and Betty will be coming soon should delight fans, especially as Betty’s romance with Jughead has been on the rocks for a while.

So could this mean a wedding could be on the cards very soon?

After all, the gang are no longer in school and any “deepening” of a romance in their adult years could mean walking down the aisle.

Archie and Betty’s relationship has transformed massively since season one as the best friends began their first serious relationships with Veronica and Jughead respectively.

However, the two could never deny their feelings for one another and they have shared a few kisses over the years.

Now that Veronica is trying to get a divorce, will she get in the way of Archie once again pursuing a relationship with Betty?

Veronica previously discovered Archie’s dalliance with Betty and was crushed by the revelation.

Ever since Jughead and Betty got together in season one, Jughead has been worried that Betty would leave him for her best friend, so does this mean that the two were always meant to find their way back to one another?

Aguirre-Sacasa previously teased fans about Archie and Betty’s future, telling Entertainment Tonight: “At the risk of spoiling anything, I’ll say that all of the characters are reaching out and trying to re-establish connections, friendships or relationships in the wake of their traumas.

“Now after seven years, I think our characters need different things than they needed in high school,” he continued.

“I think you will see a lot more of Archie and Betty,” the showrunner promised.

Riverdale is available to watch on Netflix now, with season five resuming on August 11.
