Bridgerton: Anthony advises Daphne on which suitors to avoid

Bridgerton is the biggest show on Netflix at the moment with the Regency Era tale of Daphne Bridgerton’s (played by Phoebe Dynevor) and the Duke of Hastings Simon Basset’s (Regé-Jean Page) unlikely road to romance leaving audiences swooning. The show has also ignited fierce interest in the two lead actors and their roles prior to Bridgerton. Interestingly, both Page and Dynevor were in BBC school drama Waterloo Road but did they share the screen before their turns as Bridgerton’s leading man and lady?

Did Rege-Jean Page and Phoebe Dynevor star together in Waterloo Road before Bridgerton?

Page had a number of roles before landing the part of Simon in Bridgerton after he trained at the Drama Centre London.

He started out doing some agency work and ended up with roles in Casualty, Channel 4’s student comedy Fresh Meat but his first big part was playing Guy Braxton in BBC series Waterloo.

The star appeared in eight episodes of the drama in 2015 as the new teacher at school, who it emerges is homeless and ended up sleeping at the school when he was unable to make ends meet.

After Waterloo Road, Page featured in American slave drama remake Roots, Mortal Engines and Shondaland series For The People.

Dynevor, meanwhile, started out her career with her first role playing Siobhan Mailey in Waterloo Road.

Siobhan was a student who landed herself in trouble many times with Dynevor starring in the show between 2009 and 2010 for 10 episodes.

She went on to appear in many TV shows after this including The Village, Prisoners Wives, Dickensian and Snatch.

This means the pair didn’t cross paths on Waterloo Road and missed each other by several years.

However, the duo both impressed Bridgerton producers when they auditioned for their roles with their chemistry being the winning element in the pair being cast.

Page and Dynevor, along with the rest of the cast, were sent off to a Regency boot camp to immerse them in the era and get to grips with etiquette, horse riding and dancing.

Dynevor said this time helped her and Page to get to know each other and build upon the initial chemistry of the characters.

She said: “We spent so much time together; we were also staying at the same hotel, which was quite funny to see each other for breakfast.

“We had a lot of rehearsals, and then we rehearsed together on our own.

“By the time we got to set, we knew each other really well, we had spent a ton of time together, so we weren’t getting to know each other as filming went on.”

Dynevor said dancing to contemporary tracks like Rihanna and Stormzy during rehearsals helped immensely for the pair to get into their roles and build on Simon and Daphne’s romance.

She explained to Elle how they also had an “amazing” intimacy coordinator to block out the numerous sex scenes in the drama with the actors feeling comfortable when it came to the day of filming.

Netflix has yet to confirm whether Bridgerton season two has been greenlit, but judging by the global response it may only be a matter of time.

The show takes its cue from Julia Quinn’s Bridgerton novel series with each instalment focusing on a different member of the titular family.

Season one focused on Daphne’s sexual awakening and her marriage to the Duke, while the second series could follow Anthony Bridgerton (Jonathan Bailey) and his own quest for love.

Then again, the show may diverge from the order of the novel series and choose to focus on one of the other siblings.

Among the other characters who could take the focus may be Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton) and Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan).
