In an unearthed clip, Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby speak to a caller about their coming out journey on This Morning. The moment was broadcast three years before Phillip, 57, confirmed he was gay on the show on Friday February 7.

The call in took place in 2017 when Phillip and Holly asked viewers what they would tell their younger selves.

Nik explained: “I would tell my 18-year-old self it’s okay to be you.

“I knew at 18 I was gay…,” before trailing off.

They continued: “I was so ashamed of it I can’t tell you how ashamed I was and I went on to get married and have children and it took till I was 37 to realise who I realise was.”

Holly asked: “What happened to your life then?”

“I left my husband and it was all very amicable and I met a woman and we’re going to celebrate four years of marriage in March,” Nik replied.

She added: “I’ve never been happier.”

Phillip, who had been listening in, asked: “What about family reaction, how did your family react?”

“Really well,” Nik explained. “I was worried.

“I don’t know why because my mum and dad were very cool when I finally came out they were so happy because they always knew there was something wrong.

“What was amazing about it, my mum died about a year and a half after I met her, she knew I was happy.”

Holly asked: “While you can’t go back and speak to your 18-year-old self, there will be a lot of people just embarking on this journey now or feeling similar feelings.

“What would you say to them?”

“I would just say nobody cares!” Nik exclaimed.

“I had this feeling that everyone would care and nobody would like me but nobody cares.

“If people care for you they just care for you. They don’t care who you go out with and who you live with.”

Phillip chipped in to remark: “Not all families are like yours though.

“Some families do care, you have to be careful how you do something like this.”

But Nik encouraged: “At the end of the day your happiness is the most important thing.

“You have to be selfish, you don’t have to rub it in people’s faces. I strongly believe that if people love you, they want you to be happy and if that makes you happy then it shouldn’t matter.”

Before his interview on This Morning last week, Phillip shared a post on his Instagram stories explaining his decision to come out.
