Ever since the dramatic reintroduction of Alfie Solomons (played by Tom Hardy) in the fifth season of Peaky Blinders, some viewers have been left wondering whether any other major characters could return from the dead. However, John Shelby star Joe Cole has now revealed what the future holds for his beloved Shelby brother in a new interview.

Will John Shelby return to Peaky Blinders?

One of the most shocking deaths in the past five seasons of Peaky Blinders was that of John Shelby (Joe Cole).

He was killed by the New York Mafia in the opening episode of season four after a Black Hand was issued for the Shelby family’s deaths.

He was shot dead outside of the house he shared with Esme (Aimee-Ffion Edwards) while Michael Gray (Finn Cole) was also injured.

Fans will remember this was all a result of the Peaky Blinders killing Vicente Changretta (Kenneth Colley) as revenge for Grace Shelby’s (Annabelle Wallis) death.

The death was a harrowing one for fans as John had been one of the original cast members of the BBC show.

However, there is always hope a character may return from the dead.

The show has used this trick with Danny Whizz-Bang (Samuel Edward-Cook) Arthur Shelby (Paul Anderson) and most recently with Alfie’s return in the fifth season of the show.

This was after he was thought to have been shot dead by Tommy Shelby (Cillian Murphy) in the season four finale.

Cole recently spoke to the Radio Times about this twist and the possibility of ever coming back to the series.

When asked if could follow in Alfie’s footsteps and return, he said: “I think it’s hard to come back from that. So I’m not sure!”

This is not the first time, Cole has spoken about leaving the show, previously revealing to Digital Spy why he left.

Back in 2018, he told the publication: “I was just busy doing other projects.

“I wouldn’t have been able to do Black Mirror, I’ve got a bunch of films that I’m trying to do.

“I thought it was my time to go, give other people an opportunity for their parts to grow. I thought it was the right time to pass the baton on.”

Cole’s younger brother still stars on the series as Michael, who was last seen challenging Tommy for power as the head of the Birmingham gang.

While it seems pretty certain he will not be returning for the new outing of the series, Cole will soon be starring in another new show.

The actor will next be appearing in the new Gareth Edwards series Gangs of London.
