Romance and historical drama Outlander revolves very much around star-crossed lovers Jamie (played by Sam Heughan) and Claire Fraser (Caitriona Balfe). Their aspirational love story knows no bounds with the pair always finding a way back to each other. Many Outlander fans are curious to know more about the pair and the age gap.

What’s the age gap between Jamie Fraser and Claire?

Jamie and Claire’s romance was an unconventional one to say the least after the 20th century nurse was unceremoniously and unexpectedly propelled through time.

She ended up in the 1800s where she was forced to wed Jamie as a form of protection against the British Redcoats and the evil Captain “Black Jack” Randall (Tobias Menzies).

Despite the odds and being married to historian Frank Randall in the present, Jamie and Claire fell in love with each other.

Their romance was an intense one, underlaid by their deep sexual chemistry.

Interestingly though, on their wedding night, it emerged Jamie had far less experience in the bedroom than his new wife Claire.

Jamie was a virgin and his initial attempts to consummate the marriage were amusing. It was up to Claire to educate him in the art of lovemaking after his attempts were based on watching horses mating.

This also revealed Jamie was somewhat younger than Claire and plenty of people have often wondered how much difference there was between them.

In Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander novels, Claire is said to be around three-and-a-half to four years older than her husband.

But there is a slight disparity between the novels and the Starz TV show which closes the gap.

Instead, the show has Claire as being three years older than Jamie as she is 26 in season one while he is 23.

Season five of Outlander saw Jamie celebrating his 50th birthday, which means in the show Claire will be about 53.

Perhaps part of the appeal of Claire for Jamie was her strong-headed and independent ways.

Claire was never afraid to speak her mind and had a world weariness he hadn’t seen in other women around Castle Leoch or Lallybroch.

In theory and taking into consideration time travel, Jamie is technically about 200 years older than Claire.

Speaking about Jamie and Claire’s marriage as a tale for the ages, Gabaldon told Express.co.uk earlier this year how the pair were “very committed” to one another.

She said they saw their marriage as a “sacred vow” and how the pair sacrificed so much for one another in Outlander.

Gabaldon is now working on the penultimate instalment of the Outlander book series titled Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone.

She will be rounding off the epic book series with a 10th book which is yet to receive a title.

While not much is known about how the Outlander saga will be concluding and the fates of the two lovers, one thing is known: Jamie’s ghost will appear to Claire shortly before she travel through time for the first time.

The ending is expected to leave fans satisfied albeit emotional as it marks the beginning and the end for the couple.
