In the shocking season finale of Outlander, fans saw a different and unexpected side of Marsali Fraser (played by Lauren Lyle) as she went out to avenge time traveller Claire Fraser (Caitriona Balfe). With season six of Starz’s historical drama fast approaching, star Lauren opened up on what she really thinks of her character.

Marsali first graced the screens in season three as the daughter of Laoghaire MacKenzie (Nell Hudson) and Simon MacKimmie.

Although she later grew to admire Claire, Marsali’s mother hated her because she was filled with jealousy.

After Claire’s first trip to the past, she encountered Jamie Fraser (played by Sam Heughan) and the two got married.

However, when Claire returned to the 20th century, the couple had been apart for 20 years and Jamie’s sister Jenny Murray (Laura Donnelly) encouraged him to marry Laoghaire.

Eventually, both relationships fell apart and in season three Claire returned to be reunited with Jamie.

This was also when viewers were introduced to Marsali who had a stubborn yet loving personality.

Although she initially hated Claire in accordance with whatever her mother would say about her, Marsali spent time with her and realised she was kind.

She even became Claire’s assistant at the Fraser Ridge surgery and helped out with medical procedures.

Speaking to Wonderland Magazine, actress Lauren shared her real thoughts on the character and revealed: “Marsali has a brave and romantic energy I have loved exploring and like to think is a part of me too.

She explained: “She innately commands respect which is something I strive to and she really goes after what she wants.

“I feel like I know her inside out and I’m really protective of her having been with her for 4 seasons, “ Lauren added.

“There are also a lot of differences and I love that in real life I look nothing like Marsali and the second I put on the corset and give my accent her lilt we slip into each other.“

The actress went on to say: “Also being the daughter of a woman with an evil reputation is so fun to play and is a delicious way to ground her as a character. Marsali has some of the quickest wit on the show which I’d like to think we share.”

Unlike Claire’s daughter Brianna (Sophie Skelton) Marsali didn’t flinch at the sight of blood or gore, which impressed the nurse.

Claire realised her true potential as a medic when she butcher an animal, which would later be cooked.

Eventually, the two got close and Claire took her under her wing, which Marsali initially struggled with because of her mother’s difficult relationship with the nurse.

However, this didn’t stop Marsali swooping in and avenging Claire when she was attacked in the season finale of Outlander.

Claire had been raped by Lionel Brown (Ned Dennehy) and his men as punishment for encouraging women to be sexually liberated.

Thankfully, Jamie arrived to rescue her and kill his men, then transported Lionel back to Frasers Ridge to face questioning.

Claire turned down the opportunity to kill him and showed him mercy, however in the surprising scene Marsali injected him with a lethal substance which killed him.

Outlander season 6 will premiere in early 2022 on Starz.
