Season five may have wrapped up in 2020 but fans have been revisiting the series for clues about the forthcoming cycle of Outlander. The sixth outing is going to be adapted from Diana Gabaldon’s A Breath of Snow and Ashes and perhaps some additional material from the world of Outlander. But have the writers already foreshadowed details of what’s to come in the new episodes with some hints in the final scene of season five?

Season five ended on a sombre and reflective note with Jamie (played by Sam Heughan) and Claire Fraser (Caitriona Balfe) gazing out onto the horizon.
They were standing on the veranda of Fraser’s Ridge and surveying the land but also looking beyond at the gathering clouds in the distance.
Claire was still recovering from her horrific sexual assault with Jamie supporting her emotionally through the ordeal.
The foreshadowing came from the clouds on the landscape, signalling there would be more strife to come for the couple.
Claire pointed out a crooked post with Jamie offering to mend it straight away but being told it could wait for a day.
She said: “Who knows how much longer we’ll have this peace, knowing what’s coming.”
Jamie nodded as he acknowledged they couldn’t change history with the American Revolution and the war coming.
Her words confirmed there would be great danger ahead for the couple – something which isn’t unusual for Outlander.
But compared to the optimism and hope of changing the course of events back at the end of season one with Jamie and Claire going off to France, there was more of a world-weariness for the couple now.
Jamie told his wife: “The bravest are surely those with the clearest vision of what is before them: glory, danger alike yet not withstanding going out to meet it. That was Thucydides who said that, not me.”
He added: “It’s only brave when there’s a choice you must make.”
Again, the dialogue alluded to difficult future decisions the couple would have to make possibly about going into battle again after Alamance.
Claire reasoned in response: “Well, we’ll meet it the best we can.”
The line suggested they would reluctantly be thrown in harm’s way with little control over the course of events.
The sound of thunder and flashes of lightning only heightened the sense of danger waiting for the couple, promising some big struggles ahead.
Another interesting moment in the final scene which is interesting saw Jamie and Claire watching Roger (Richard Rankin) and Brianna MacKenzie (Sophie Skelton) playing with some young children as the kids ran off into the distance.
This too seemed to suggest Brianna and Roger would perhaps return to the future given their physical distance from Jamie and Claire.
They were planning to go in season five but made the decision to ultimately stay in the past but with history heating up and the stakes getting higher with the American Revolution, it seemed like this was going to change.
The writers and producers clearly used this final scene to set up a lot of the action with small hints thrown in – so through the minimal dialogue, it’s apparent there will be another shift.
A Breath of Snow and Ashes only takes place over three years between 1773 and 1776 and yet so much happens during this time.
