Tons of people died during the final season of Game of Thrones, and every death was devastating in its own way. But according to one of the writers on the show, one death in particular almost didn’t happen.

Spoilers ahead for the final season of Thrones! Get out while the getting’s good, or whatever.

One of the writers, Dave Hill, told Entertainment Weekly that the original plan was to have Ser Jorah Mormont survive, but instead he died in the Battle for Winterfell.

“For a long time we wanted Ser Jorah to be there at The Wall in the end,” he said. “The three coming out of the tunnel would be Jon and Jorah and Tormund.

“But the amount to logic we’d have to bend to get Jorah up to The Wall and get him to leave Dany’s side right before [the events in the finale] … there’s no way to do that blithely. And Jorah should have the noble death he craves defending the woman he loves.”

This would have meant that Ser Jorah would have had to watch Daenerys’ descent into madness, which would have been really hard considering he was totally and completely in love with her. The actor who played Jorah, Iain Glen, said the same thing.

“There’s a sweetness in that because Jorah will never know what she did,” Iain said. “That’s probably best. It’s a blessing for him that he never found out what happened to her. And from a pragmatic story point of view, his death served a greater purpose. Where could we have taken Jorah from there? F*ck if I know.”

UGH. Justice for Jorah!!
