Tobias Fornell (played by Joe Spano) has been on the hunt for his daughter Emily (Juliette Angelo) since the start of NCIS’s 18th season. Unfortunately, his investigation with Leroy Gibbs (Mark Harmon) ended with tragedy this week, and fans of the CBS procedural weren’t happy.

Viewers have levelled complaints at this week’s episode of NCIS, ‘Winter Chill’, for the sudden death of beloved recurring character, Emily Fornell.

Emily has been in constant peril this season, as her addiction led to Gibbs and Fornell’s investigation into a local drug ring.

Although their operation came to a successful conclusion, the same sadly couldn’t be said of Emily’s struggle with drug abuse.

Many viewers were hopeful the troubled teen would pull through from her overdose, but unfortunately the series opted for the worst possible outcome.

As the episode wrapped up on Tuesday evening, the audience took to social media to voice their disdain for NCIS’s decision to kill Fornell’s daughter.

On Twitter, one fan said: “Oh noooooooooooo! Emily is dead! She will be missed! I feel so sorry for Fornell!”

“I am not okay after tonight’s NCIS,” said another. “That was unexpected and uncalled for. This show loves to pull on my heart.”

Fans were already riled up following the off-screen passing of Dr. Jimmy Palmer’s (Brian Dietzen) wife, Breena (Michelle Pierce).

Said another fan: “First Breena Palmer and now Emily Fornell? Come on, I want to watch one episode without crying!”

The latest instalments of CBS’s popular crime drama have certainly had a morbid undercurrent as the series finally jumped forward to the coronavirus pandemic.

Although Gibbs and the team investigated grisly murders on a regular basis, the current season has hit a little too close to home as some familiar faces met their demise.

Some critical fans have even questioned the series’ decision to kill off or remove prominent female characters during the last few episodes.

Emily’s death arrived shortly after series regular Jackie Sloane (Maria Bello) departed the series.

Moreover, viewers were equally furious when Breena Palmer was unceremoniously ditched from the series without even being given a final goodbye.

One such viewer wrote: “First Breena, then Jack, now Emily?!

“NCIS why do you hate such amazing female characters?! I am a die hard fan of this show but these last three episodes have really bothered me.”

Other members of the audience have even vowed to stop watching altogether if season 18 remains adamant on tugging on the viewers’ heartstrings each week.

Another Twitter user posted: “First Breena and now Emily?? Same season! I am done!! DONE!!

“GOODBYE NCIS!! You went way over the top and I do not enjoy the show anymore.”

While the series continues to deliver compelling drama and shocking twists, fans who tune in for light-hearted escapism have been put through the ringer in recent weeks.

With another seven episodes to go in the current outing, hopefully the rest of season 18 can return the series to its roots and win back the goodwill of its disgruntled fanbase.

NCIS season 18 continues Tuesday, March 16 on CBS.
