Hetty Lange (played by Linda Hunt) may have taken somewhat of a backseat during the last season of NCIS: Los Angeles but the long-serving OSP leader will be back for season 13. After returning from an unknown location at the end of season 12, a first-look at the upcoming series – which premieres on October 10 on CBS – hints that Hetty doesn’t want to stick around for too much longer, eager to get herself back in the thick of the action. However, this time around, Admiral Kilbride (Gerard McRaney) looks like he’s going to prove a formidable obstacle if Hetty wants to stay on the team – but will it result in her leaving?

Question marks surrounding Hetty’s future have been rife for a number of seasons now, with talk of retirement, replacements and limited screen time dominating the conversation.

Now, in a sneak peek from the NCIS LA season 13 premiere, it looks like she and Kilbride will be doing little to quash the rumours.

In a promo clip for the episode Subject 17, Kilbride confronts Hetty about a file he’s less than pleased to find on his desk.

As Hetty is seen rumbling through her briefcase, Kilbride enters to say: “You’ll never believe what just came across my desk.”

Hetty replies: “Well, if it’s a large cockroach with only one antenna, his name is Sheldon, and he’s become sort of an office mascot.”

Puzzled, Kilbride clearly isn’t on-board with having Sheldon around as he chimes in: “Oh, I put him through my shredder last week.

“Well nobody told me he had a name,” he says as Hetty looks on surprised before Kilbride finally gets to the real issue.

“No, these were travel orders, you think you’re going back?”

“Well, I think I have to,” Hetty replies, clearly with unfinished business on her mind.

However, Kilbride is less than pleased with the idea and quickly issues some warnings: “I think somebody has to but I’m not sure it should be you.

“You made a bloody mess of things over there last time,” he added as Hetty nodded along.

Kilbride went on: “Now I will sign the papers but if you make it worse, you will be sacrificed for the sake of diplomacy.”

And the warnings didn’t stop there as Kilbride continued: “And if you do something really stupid and find yourself in a cage – again – you will be disavowed.”

Hetty mulled over Kilbride’s stark caution before replying with her typical wit.

“Well, that’s terribly encouraging,” Hetty replied with a smirk on her face.

But even with Kilbride’s warning ringing in her ears, Hetty doesn’t look like she’s going to be deterred from heading out once more.

This time, however, it sounds like Kilbride won’t be giving any special treatment to ensure her safety.

If Hetty were to find herself in a sticky situation again, could this be the beginning of the end for the character?

Hetty could well be bidding farewell to the likes of Kensi (Daniela Ruah), Deeks (Eric Christian Olsen) and the rest of the team if this interaction with Kilbride is anything to go by.

NCIS: Los Angeles season 13 premieres on Sunday, October 10 on CBS in the USA. A UK release date is yet to be announced.
