ITV's new medical drama, Maternal, follows three female doctors returning to the post-pandemic frontline after maternity leave.

The series explores working motherhood, as well as offering a unique perspective on the NHS, and the people working hard to hold it together.

Who is in the cast of Maternal? 

Parminder Nagra

Actress Parminder Nagra is best known for portraying Jess Bhamra in the 2002 film Bend It Like Beckham, and Dr. Neela Rasgotra in the NBC medical drama series ER.

She has also starred in a number of other titles including, Horrid Henry: The Movie, Bird Box, 13 Reasons Why, Black-ish and DI Ray.

Parminder's latest role will se her play Dr Maryam Afridi – a paediatric registrar in a high-pressured job, returning to work after two years of maternity leave.

Speaking on her new role, Parminder said: ''I liken playing Maryam to an Alton Towers ride like Oblivion.

Lara Pulver

Actress Lara Pulver is a familiar face on-screen thanks to her castings as Erin Watts in the BBC spy drama Spooks and Irene Adler on BBC's TV adaptation Sherlock. 

Other notable titles include, Da Vinci's Demons and Fleming: The Man Who Would Be Bond.

Aside from Television and Film, Pulver has also forged a successful career in the West End.

In 2016, she won the Olivier Award for Best Supporting Actress in the musical Gypsy.

Her role in Maternal will see her cast as Ms Catherine Macdiarmid – an extremely talented surgeon, finding her path in a very male-orientated profession whilst juggling life as a new mother.

When asked about the new drama, Lara explained: ''Maternal is absolutely shining a spotlight on the NHS in a celebratory
way just as much as in an eye-opening way.''

Lisa McGrillis

Actress Lisa McGillis has a number of titles under her belt including, Fungus the Bogeyman, Death in Paradise, BBC's sitcom Mum and Channel 4's Deadwater Fell.

Lisa will star as Maternal's Dr Helen Cavendish – a very warm, compassionate doctor working in acute medicine.

When discussing her new role, Lisa said: ''Being a mother myself and dealing with the life-work juggle is something that I can relate to on a day-to-day basis, like anyone who’s trying to be a good mother but is also passionate about their work, which I am.

''For the first time I feel like I’m playing a character that's close to me, so they were easy shoes to fill. It felt like an organic experience.''

When is Maternal on ITV? 

The new six-part series will air on Monday, January 16, 2023, on ITV1 at 9pm.

Episodes will be available to watch on ITVX once they have been broadcast.
