Love Island 2022 kicks off tonight (June 6) with a new twist on how the Islanders will find themselves in their original couplings on day one.

The old formula was responsible for many a success story – but many a failed romance also stemmed from the day one pickings of the contestants.

From a lack of spark, to Casa Amor tearing their romances apart a lot of the would-be love at first sight stories from the Villa fell at their first hurdle.

Daily Star have taken a look at some of the most iconic day one couplings that didn't quite make it over the finish line.

Olivia and Daniel

Olivia Buckland and Daniel Lukakis paired up on day one but things didn't run smoothly for the couple with them both clashing and quickly moving on from one another in a recoupling.

Daniel got the boot on day 15, but Olivia had brief couplings with Rykard Jenkins and Adam Maxted before Alex Bowen entered the Villa on Day 20 and captured her heart.

Alex and Olivia left the Villa as runners-up on Day 45 and have been together ever since and are now happily married and expecting a baby together.

Kem and Chloe

Kem Cetinay may have eventually been crowned winner of season three alongside Amber Davies but his day one coupling in the Villa saw him paired up with Chloe Crowhurst.

The big shock came when it was revealed that Kem was in fact Chloe's ex-boyfriend's bestie.

The couple struggled to hit it off as they just weren't each other's type on paper, so it didn't take long for Kem's eye to wander towards his eventual true summer love Amber.

Chloe then shifted her affections to Chris Hughes when he entered the villa as a bombshell, before he eventually moved on to Olivia Attwood and formed the biggest love story of the series in his bromance with Kem.

Anna and Sherif

Anna Valkili and Sherif Lanre appeared to hit things off despite her concerns about their age gap as they coupled up on day one in the Villa.

However, the romance was doomed from the start with their differences already beginning to show when Sherif was sensationally booted out of the Villa for breaking the rules after he accidentally kicked fellow Islander Molly Mae Hague in the groin during a playfight and joked it was a "c*** punt."

Anna was then single for a while before pairing with Jordan Hames, then Ovie Soko, then Jordon again, before being dumped from the Villa.

Shaughna and Callum

Shaughna Phillips was delighted when she coupled up with scaffolder Callum Jones and their relationship seemed to be going from strength to strength as they stayed unified throughout several recouplings.

However, their romance took a nose dive when Callum headed off to Casa Amor with the boys and set his sights on model Molly Smith.

Shaughna remained loyal to her day one beau and was left devastated when he headed back into the Villa hand in hand with Molly leaving her devastated and single until she was dumped from the Island a couple of weeks later.

Jake and Liberty

Jake Cornish and Liberty Poole seemed like the obvious winners of the 2021 series when they coupled up on day one of season seven.

However, as the summer progressed the cracks started to show in the relationship and Liberty grew increasingly insecure about where things were headed.

Things took a turn as they headed into the final week of the series and they split with just days to go before the grand finale, making the decision to exit the Villa together and make way for Millie Court and Liam Reardon to win.

Aaron and Shannon

Aaron Francis and Shannon Singh had one of the most short-lived romances in Love Island history when they ended up together after the day one coupling.

Shannon found herself spending just 48 hours in the Villa before she was brutally dumped and booted off the show, having spent mere minutes on screen for the viewers and leaving Aaron single and ready to move on to couple up with Sharon Gaffka.

Love Island returns to ITV2 and ITV Hub on Monday, June 6 at 9pm
