Love is Blind is the latest dating series to hit Netflix and saw strangers propose to each other without seeing what they looked like. A series with a similar theme, called Five Guys A Week on Channel 4, has also started airing. A dating expert has spoken out about whether the ideas behind both series are the best way to find love.

Love is Blind had fans talking as it was quirky take on strangers finding their forever partners.

In the series strangers talked to each other via pods and did not see what each other looked like until the man proposed to his chosen woman.

The show was one of the most-watched on Netflix as it followed the couples to see if their relationships could survive.

She said: “I think love has eyes, brains, ears and a heart so no, love is not blind.

“I can understand for the purposes of entertainment and the desire to be on TV, I think it’s how jaded people are from Tinder and how much they still desire to find that mate.

“They will do anything to have it but there is a human aspect. It’s easy to judge and say people are doing it to be on TV but from a more human point of view it’s how much you desire to have that love.

“People are so tired of going through online dating, that premise of meeting someone in a month is very promising.”

Sami said there are two aspects to attraction – physical and emotional – and you cannot have one without the other in a romantic relationship.

In the Love is Blind series the purpose of the show is the men do not see what the women look like before they propose to them.

Sami said: “When you look at this series the fact they talk for a week and have deep conversations means they share a bit of vulnerability and that gives the emotional connection, which is a sufficient condition.

“The necessary condition, which is physical, is still missing. If you have just emotional you can’t have a romantic long term relationship.”

The series was recognised for including people who others considered attractive, and Sami said she would have liked to have seen a “longer courtship period” as this is how people navigate relationships.

The series was set out across three weeks, but in real life the couples had just a few months to get to know each other, get engaged, plan a wedding and get married.

When asked how long it takes to find love, Sami said: “You can’t give a formula for how long it takes to fall in love, but what I teach is you need a minimum of three months.

“The positive development is the women are honest about what they want and they don’t settle for less. The downside is seeing non-committal sex and flings.”

Channel 4 has also launched a new series with a similar theme called Five Guys A Week, which sees a woman choose five men to move into her home at the same time.

The woman is in charge in this series and she is able to whittle her dates down from five to one, and they have to spend all their time together.

The prospect of a woman being with five men at the same time is something which excites Sami, and she recommends a similar theory to her clients.

She said: “This show definitely sounds like fun and I like the dynamic that the woman is the queen and she gets to choose.

“But it’s too much intimacy too soon. In real dating life I would say to a woman to see a man once a week otherwise you develop premature attraction.

“Women should be dating more than one guy at the same time before she makes the commitment and it’s an extremely powerful approach.

“She has several advantages – you don’t waste any time on the wrong guys, she has all the options of the menu and she gets to choose, and it doesn’t let you get hyper-focussed on one man.”

Love is Blind is available to watch on Netflix now and Five Guys A Week airs on Channel 4 on Tuesdays at 9.15pm
