The Last Kingdom is a popular historical drama series on Netflix following the legacy of Uhtred of Bebbanburg (played by Alexander Dreymon). In the fourth season, fans saw the blossoming relationship between the Dane Slayer and the Saxon Lady of Mercia Aethelflaed (Millie Brady). Season five is looking like a possibility and fans are wondering whether Aethelflaed will be able to fulfill her father’s dream without Uhtred.

Will Aethelflaed unite England without Uhtred?

Across the series, fans saw an unlikely partnership between Uhtred and Aethelflaed develop, and things came to a head in the fourth season.

Aethelflaed, the daughter of the late King Alfred (David Dawson), told Uhtred how much she admired him but he wanted to spare her the heartbreak.

However, at the start of the fourth season, it became clear the couple pursued their relationship and tried to keep their love affair secret.

Uhtred has always shown respect for the Lady of Mercia, and he vowed to stay loyal to her.

Before he died, Alfred had told Uhtred about his mission to unite England as one country, and he wanted Uhtred to help his children achieve his dream.

Things were looking positive for the pair during the fourth season when Uhtred came to Aethelflaed’s aid at the Battle of Tettenhall.

However, when Aethelflaed was elected leader of the Mercians, the compromise meant she could not see Uhtred in a romantic way anymore.

She said she had to choose the desires of her people over her own, and Uhtred understood her decision.

At the end of the fourth season, he separated from Aethelflaed, but said he would always answer Mercia’s call if they needed help.

Executive producer for the series, Nigel Marchant, has already revealed a season five will focus on the uniting of kingdoms.

With this in mind, fans are wondering whether Uhtred will return to help Aethelflaed, or whether she will unite England alone.

Speaking about Aethelflaed’s relationship with Uhtred, Brady said: “I think what’s been nice about it, is that it’s been brewing for a couple of seasons.

“At the end of season two, there was a kiss on the cheek that everyone was excited about, then in season three, nothing really happened.

“They had a little sneaky kiss but this season it surpasses anything that I thought it would be. Because they have such a friendship foundation to their relationship, I think they see each other on a par.

“As two characters, both are fierce and have a similar fire to get what they want. Uhtred is looking to claim Bebbanburg, Aethelflaed’ s looking to unite kingdoms.”

She added: “They are extremely headstrong and I think before all the sexual romance, underneath is a lot of respect between them and a huge amount of love and friendship.

“They’ve got an exciting relationship which has been so nice to explore more this year.”

Dreymon described Aethelflaed as “the sunshine in Uhtred’s life”, saying he has always shown affection towards her.

He recognised the amount of respect shown between the two characters, and Aethelflaed carried her responsibility “with so much grace”.

As the series is based on Anglo-Saxon history, the next season will address how King Edward (Timothy Innes) and Aethelflaed will unite England.

According to history, Aethelflaed ruled Mercia from 911 until her death in 918, and she was indeed the eldest daughter of Alfred.

She played a major role in fighting off Vikings together with her brother, Edward the Elder.

Aethelflaed’s legacy has gone down in history and she was known for being an independent ruler, even when she was married to husband Aethelred (Toby Regbo).

With this in mind, there is a possibility Aethelflaed will unite England without the support of Uhtred.

However, fans are likely to see more of Uhtred and Aethelflaed together, as he would never abandon her.
