Kate Garraway revealed Prince William empathised with her children’s ordeal last year, after her husband Derek Draper was hospitalised with Covid.

Speaking on Thursday’s Good Morning Britain, Kate, 53, recalled the encounter, remembering the compassion William and Kate Middleton showed her.

Kate was introduced to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge at the 2020 Pride of Britain awards, meeting them as they paid tribute to the incredible work done by the NHS.

During the encounter, Prince William sympathised with Kate’s children Darcey, 15, and Billy, 11, understanding what it was like to have an absent partner in his own childhood.

William was 15 when his mum, Princess Diana, died tragically in a car accident in Paris, while his brother Harry was just 12.

Marking Kate and William’s 10 year wedding anniversary, Kate said: "They were lovely, I always thought it was very touching how they even know about things that had been happening in my family."

Kate’s husband Derek was admitted to hospital with Covid in March of last year, where he was taken to ICU and placed in an induced coma.

Thankfully, he has since woken up from the coma and returned to his family home, but he was hospitalised for over one year, facing immense health issues.

Kate continued: "They related very much to the children, and what it was like for them to have a father that was absent, and sick.

"Of course, William knows all about what it's like to have a parent not there."

The broadcaster went on to praise Kate and William’s happy marriage, admitting their natural chemistry was visible when she saw them in person.

She said: "But actually watching them when they were with each other just getting ready for things, and Kate was dusting William's shoulders.
