Lauren Laverne and Jermaine Jenas were joined by Sir Ian McKellen and John Bishop on Wednesday’s The One Show. The acting duo were discussing their new family-friendly pantomime Mother Goose when Doctor Who star John took a swipe at Prime Minister Liz Truss.

Introducing the guests, Lauren said: “You two are going to form the partnership that Britain needs quite frankly.

“Starring this year in panto in Mother Goose, there have been many versions of this panto over the years, it’s a much-loved classic. What’s this one about?”

“It’s about me really,” Ian quipped. “I’m Mother Goose and this is my home secretary.”

John replied: “It is like being a home secretary because it’s the story of Mother Goose, who finds a goose that lays a golden egg and that sorts all her financial problems out.

“Which apparently is a better economic policy than Liz Truss has found.

“So she’s been in touch and asked for the egg.”

Ian interjected: “Don’t use all your material on this show.”

The jibe comes after new Chancellor Jeremy Hunt reversed almost all the tax cuts announced by his predecessor Kwasi Kwarteng on Monday.

After the cheeky swipe, John went on to explain: “It’s a story about a family who are in financial trouble and they get a goose that lays a golden egg and it changes everything but it also ruins everything.”

Later in the interview, Ian went on to explain why he was thrilled to be working with the comedian.

John began: “I got asked, ‘Would I be interested to do it?’ And obviously, as a comedian people say, ‘Would you do a panto?’ and I’ve done one in the past.

“But it’s been a long time and so I was invited to Ian’s for lunch to meet Jonathan [Harvey], the writer and Cal [McCrystal] the director.

“And you’re at Ian McKellen’s house and you’re having lunch and he says, ‘Do you want to do this with me?’

“And I went, ‘Yeah, obviously,’ I didn’t even know what he was talking about I was just lost in the fact that I was there.

“From anyone’s point of view, to be able to spend time with somebody who can teach you so much, but also he’s got the joy in theatre that was the thing that he sold it to me on.”

“This is just joy and we need it,” the Doctor Who star added.

Ian remarked: “And what [John] doesn’t know is really my ambition, the only thing I ever wanted to be on stage was a stand-up comic. I’m so in awe of them.”

“That’s all I’ve wanted to do so working with [John] is much more of a thrill than him working with me.”

“And I’ve always wanted to be a wizard,” John joked.

The One Show airs on BBC One on weekdays at 7pm.
