Calls to cancel The Jeremy Kyle Show for good are being made following the apparent suicide of a guest who appeared on the long-running talk show series.

63-year-old Steven Dymond was found dead a week after he filmed an episode and was said to have been distraught afterwards due to failing a lie detector test.

Tory MP Charles Walker, a vice-chairman of the all-party parliamentary group on suicide and self-harm prevention, told the Daily Mail: ‘On reflection, ITV would be best advised just to stop it. It’s a very, very unattractive TV show and I’m surprised it’s gone on so long.’

MP Damian Collins, chairman of the Commons Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Committee, said TV companies ‘have a duty to care to the people who take part in their programmes’.

Additionally, MP Simon Hart, who also sits on the committee, described the Jeremy Kyle Show as ‘car-crash TV which revels in people’s terrible misfortune and sometimes their vulnerabilities’.

ITV said its staff and The Jeremy Kyle Show production team were ‘shocked and saddened’ at the death and the episode will be reviewed due to the ‘seriousness of this event’.

The talk show has since been suspended indefinitely and all episodes have been removed from the ITV Hub.

In the episode itself, Mr Dymond took a lie-detector test to convince fiancee Jane Callaghan he had not been unfaithful but they split after he failed, according to The Sun.

Ms Callaghan said he had been ‘quietly struggling’, but praised the show’s team for their after-care efforts.

She told the paper: ‘They were brilliant. They were there when he needed help. They were really persistent.’

The programme has had its regular daytime morning slot on ITV since 2005.

The broadcaster’s support for its reality show talent has also come under scrutiny following the deaths of two former Love Island contestants, Sophie Gradon and Mike Thalassitis.

ITV has since assured Metro.co.uk: ‘The Jeremy Kyle Show has a significant and detailed duty of care processes in place for contributors pre, during and post-show which have been built up over 14 years.’

The Jeremy Kyle Show was pulled from the air on Monday and has been suspended indefinitely.
