The Mandalorian’s season finale truly delivered and was probably the best episode of the season. It’s only been eight episodes, but fans latched onto the story of Din Djarin, and the Child. The finale really gives viewers something to look forward too. With Baby Yoda safe, for now, Mando is off to find the Child’s people. Whether that means Yoda’s unspecified species or the Jedi is unclear yet. But wherever they go, Moff Gideon will be following with his Darksaber.

If you’re a fan of the animated series, you already know a lot of backstory to things that happened in The Mandalorian. And you might have noticed Moff Gideon mentioned the Siege of Mandalore. That event plays a significant part in the upcoming The Clone Wars season. MAJOR spoilers for The Mandalorian and partial spoilers for The Clone Wars Season 7.

Moff Gideon called out the Siege of Mandalore in ‘The Mandalorian’

When Moff Gideon and his Stormtroopers surround Mando, Cara Dune, and Greef Karga outside the cantina they’re hiding in, he brings out the big guns. Not just metaphorically; he literally brings out an E-Web heavy repeating blaster. That thing would kill them straight away if they hadn’t gotten reinforcements from IG-11.

While Moff Gideon is trying to force them out before he has to use the blaster, he’s taunting them all with knowledge of their pasts. When he gets to Mando, he talks about the Night of a Thousand Tears during the Siege of Mandalore, when a “similar ordinance” to the E-Web “laid waste to fields of Mandalorian recruits.”

This moment makes them all pause since he knew so much of their pasts, even Mando’s real name. And while Star Wars viewers haven’t seen this massive battle yet, the Siege of Mandalore is a turning point for the Mandalorians, for the Clone War, and many major characters like Maul and Ahsoka. The Clone Wars’ new season will show this battle for the first time.

The Siege of Mandalore is a part of the finale of this final season

Season 7 of The Clone Wars is special for many reasons, but the biggest is that it is the ending viewers have longed for since the cancellation of the show in 2014. It ended before it was able to fully connect Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith. Now, Dave Filoni and the show will be able to give fans arcs they have been longing for like the Bad Batch and Ahsoka’s Walkabout (her time in the underworld of Coruscant). It’ll also end with this siege.

Ahsoka is the commander for the 501st Legion of Clone troopers in this battle, which included Captain Rex as well. Maul was in charge of Mandalore through his hold on the corrupt government and Death Watch. The Republic forces went to help the planet, but it didn’t end that way. Without giving away too much in preparation for the new episodes, let’s just say it overlaps with Anakin’s turn to the Dark Side and the overthrow of the Republic and the Jedi. The new Galactic Empire takes over Mandalore and results in Mando’s people going into hiding.

This hints that Moff Gideon could appear in the final season of ‘The Clone Wars’

This direct inclusion of the Siege of Mandalore in The Mandalorian could imply at more Easter eggs to come. Moff Gideon sounds like he was there on Mandalore as well, which would be cool to see in The Clone Wars. But we see he has the Darksaber in the finale of The Mandalorian, so this could also be where he was first exposed to it, thanks to Maul.

Of course, the sword is in a few others’ hands before the Disney+ show even began, but the Siege of Mandalore could have given Moff Gideon a taste of the Darksaber that he carried until he stole the weapon. Or maybe Gideon has a deeper connection to Mandalore.

Whatever happens, The Mandalorian has shown that Star Wars television shows are just as good (if not better) than the movies, and the future of the franchise is in good hands.
