HOLLYOAKS fans were in hysterics tonight as James Nightingale remembered HE sent the mystery letters that have been plaguing the village.

The lawyer – who is played by actor Gregory Finnegan – received a note exposing him as one of Mercedes McQueen's shooters yesterday.

But, unable to think who would expose him, it dawned on him tonight that it was him.

He and Grace were behind the shooting before Christmas last year after Mercedes framed Harry Thompson as the driver during Grace’s hit-and-run.

Speaking to his outraged mum Marnie about his actions of trying to kill Mercedes on Wednesday night, he began to have flashbacks of printing the letters.

And when he found them on his computer and reprinted them he confirmed his worst suspicions.

He added: "I can't believe I wrote those letters – do I really hate myself that much? It must be the new sleeping pills I've been taking. I can't recall a thing."

The scene had fans in hysterics at the drama, with one writing: "JAMES SENT THEM WHAT."

Another baffled viewer tweeted: "Yeah James has totally lost it.

A third said: "James has been those sending letters to himself?" alongside a video saying: "You need professional help."

Another shared a pictures of Ken Jeong on The Masked Singer saying: "I know exactly who shot Mercedes" adding: "And it is me sending the poison pen letters."

However worse was to come for James as later in the episode as it turned out he sent another letter to Mercedes herself.

It told her that whoever shot her was at Jesse's funeral and it sparked her into finding out who shot her once again.

Hollyoaks airs weeknights on Channel 4 at 6.30pm with a first look episode following on E4 at 7pm
