A GB News presenter has told an experienced meteorologist that he should be "happy" about the "lethal" heatwave that will sweep over Britain next week.

Appearing on channel on Saturday (July 16), Met Office weather expert John Hammond said on air: "I’ve been forecasting for 30-odd years, I’ve never seen anything like this."

He added that "hundreds if not thousands of excess deaths" this summer because of the heatwave we are all about to ensure.

Branding the looming hot weather as "frightening," GB News host Bev Turner shook off his opinions and suggestions and then slammed the expert.

She told him: "Oh John, I want us to be happy about the weather.

"I don’t know whether something has happened to meteorologists to make you all a little bit fatalistic and harbingers of doom.

"Haven’t we always had hot weather?"

Viewers at home were taken aback by Bev's comments – which soon circulated around social media – with many taking to Twitter.

"It looks like the science of meteorology has become too 'Woke' for #GBNews," said one.

"You don't have to be bonkers to work for @GBNews but it helps," slammed another, before adding: "GB News presenter happy at the idea of excessive deaths and danger to life!"

This comes after Britain was put on red alert as the nation prepares for a record-breaking 41C three-day heatwave.

With a national emergency declared, there are fears that this heatwave could result in water shortages, melting roads, and even death.

On Friday (July 15) the Met Office issued its first ever extreme heat weather red warning across much of England.

The warning means that there is a "risk to life".
