The Game of Thrones series finale had a number of plot details which divided fans, from Jon Snow (played by Kit Harington) killing Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) to Bran Stark (Isaac Hempstead-Wright) being crowned King of the Six Kingdoms. The final scene of GOT season eight also had fans talking as Jon Snow is shown heading north of Castle Black with Wildlings after being banished to the Night’s Watch. Where Jon Snow was going has left viewers seriously divided with some suggesting he is now a Wildling.

Where was Jon Snow going at the end of Game of Thrones?

WARNING: This article contains spoilers from Game of Thrones season 8.

Game of Thrones’ final ever episode drew to a close with Jon Snow riding north of the wall with Tormund Giantsbane (Kristofer Hivju) and a group of Wildlings.

Jon Snow and Tormund were both on horseback as they left Castle Black and the wall behind them and rode north.

HBO viewers witnessed Jon Snow turn and watch the gate of the Night’s Watch close and he rode on.

This final scene from the Game of Thrones finale has left viewers around the world debating where he’s going and there are a number of possible answers as to where he could be off to.

The first possible destination for Jon Snow beyond the wall could be the Haunted Forest.

The Haunted Forest is located beyond the wall and it is where his former love Ygritte (Rose Leslie) was laid to rest.

Ygritte was a member of the Free Folk that Jon Snow fell in love with while holding her prisoner during his first stint with the Night’s Watch.

She died in season four during the Wildlings’ battle against the Night’s Watch at Castle Black thanks to an arrow through the chest from Olly (Brenock O’Connor).

Tormund was well aware of the pair’s bond, telling Jon in season four that Ygritte loved him because “all she ever talked about was killing” him.

Jon Snow has always held her close to his heart and, despite a romance with Daenerys, it’s likely she’s still the love of his life.

This means the Haunted Forest may well be Jon’s first port of call beyond the wall.

Another possibility for Jon beyond the wall could be to find his uncle Benjen Stark (Joseph Mawle).

Benjen saved Jon from the Night King (Vladimir Furdik) and his army of wights in season seven.

Jon Snow’s uncle loaded him onto his horse and sent him back to Castle Black while he valiantly tried to fight off the wights.

The wights eventually overcame Benjen, overpowering him and eventually killing him.

Benjen did not reappear in season eight, episode three, The Long Night as a wight, suggesting his body may still be there to be found.

Jon Snow is a man who holds family ties and honour of paramount importance so he could realistically try and seek out his uncle’s body for a proper goodbye.

The truth is that Jon Snow’s destination remains shrouded in mystery with the only clue being that it is beyond the wall.

There are a number of places of note he could visit with the Free Folk.

Hardhome is one such location, but it is unlikely Jon Snow will want to revisit there after the monumental fight against the White Walkers and wights in season five.

Other locations north of the wall include Thenn, Frostfangs, Milkwater and Skirling Pass.

Wherever he ends up, the final scene has left Game of Thrones thinking it will be as part of the Wildlings.

Did Jon Snow become a Wildling in Game of Thrones?

When Jon Snow arrives back at Castle Black in the series finale, he is greeted by Tormund.

No words are said between the pair, although viewers do see Jon receive, what could be interpreted as, a guard of honour from the Free Folk.

Jon Snow then reunites with Ghost, his dire wolf, before the action shows Arya Stark (Maisie Williams) head west on her travels and Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner) declared Queen in the North.

As the episode draws to an end, Jon and Tormund leave Castle Black and head north with the Wildlings and Ghost.

Again, no words are said, but Jon does shoot a longing gaze at the gates behind him as they shut.

This prolonged stare combined with the fact he’s the only non-Wildling travelling with the group suggests he could be on his way to becoming one of them.

A member of the Free Folk is only defined by that person living beyond the wall so, should Jon Snow decide to do so, he could well consider himself a Wildling.
