The Game of Thrones season eight finale saw the shocking death of Daenerys Targaryen (played by Emilia Clarke) after the Mother of Dragons was stabbed by love interest Jon Snow (Kit Harrington).

However, despite Jon actually killing her, others had attempted to assassinate her previously – and there was a good reason why.

It has been no secret that Varys was turning against Daenerys, with the Spider claiming Jon had a more legitimate claim to the Iron Throne after finding out who his parents were.

Fans will remember the scene where Varys was sitting in his chamber writing notes to his sources when a young girl burst into his room and told him Daenerys “wouldn’t eat again,” to which Varys explained she should “try again tomorrow”.

Although the script never openly expressed the Spider was trying to poison Daenerys, fans suspected this was the case.

At this year’s San Diego Comic-con, Conleth himself confirmed that Varys was set on destroying Daenerys after foreseeing her villainous motives.

Addressing the audience, Conleth said: “Yeah…The coin, when a Targaryen is born, is going to be one side or the other and [Dany’s] has come down a bit cray cray towards the end.”

Indeed, the finale saw the Mother of Dragons ruthlessly murder thousands and it came as no surprise that her supporters would begin to plot against her.

However, Varys did not get the chance after Daenerys ordered his death when she learnt he’d been planning her murder.

And, actor Conleth revealed there was a reason why Varys had to take control – Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage) and Jon would not listen to his fears as they were so in love with her.

Conleth said: “I think Varys knew long ago he was going to die, and what the sorcerer might’ve said to him, might’ve been what [Dany] says when he’s burnt to death.

“So I think all this has an inevitability; he knew he couldn’t get through to Jon Snow, or Tyrion because they were both in love with Daenerys.

“That blinds people’s judgements. So he knew he had to try anyway to stop her, and that it was very possible he’d be killed.

“I thought it was a cool death, very dignified… there are ways to get fired and that was one of the best.”

Speaking out about his character’s death, Conleth added: “I took it very personally, I took it as a person, not as an actor or an artist.

“I understood the reactions of previous actors who had been in the same position a lot more than I did at the time.

“You can’t help feeling that you failed in some way, that you haven’t lived up to some expectation that you didn’t know about.

“The only thing that consoles you is people who worked a lot harder than you are in the same boat. So that helps.

“I don’t think anybody who hasn’t been through it can identify with it. They think, ‘What’s all the fuss about? You’re all finishing anyway.’

“But you take it personally, you can’t help it.”
