It’s no secret that the last season of Game of Thrones is very controversial among fans. One of the biggest controversies with the show is the death of Daenerys Targaryen. Of course, there’s a fan theory that can fix that.

While it might not necessarily be what the writers of the show had in mind, fans missing the Mother of Dragons can take comfort in this theory. So what is this Game of Thrones fan theory? And why might fans be able to take comfort in it? Find out, ahead.

What happened to Daenerys Targaryen in ‘Game of Thrones’?

Daenerys Targaryen is a character that Game of Thrones fans got to know over eight seasons. Fans watched as she triumphed over adversity again and again until suddenly she didn’t. Fans watched, shocked, as she killed the people of King’s Landing before finally going after Jaime and Cersei Lannister. Many fans would argue that her transformation from hero to villain didn’t make much sense.

After all, how could such a strong queen, the Breaker of Chains, turn into a villain? Yet somehow, she did. Fans watched as she killed and then Jon Snow seemingly had no choice but to kill her. Though it wasn’t what many fans wanted, it was an ending to her story.

Or was it?

According to Express.co.uk, this Game of Thrones fan theory is based on a line at the end of the finale. Sam Tarly mentions that Drogon, Daenerys’ last remaining dragon, was last seen “flying east towards Volantis” with Daenerys’ body. According to the books that Game of Thrones is based on, the A Song of Ice and Fire series, Volantis is home to many Red Priests and Priestesses, the followers of R’hllor. Melisandre is one of their number and she was able to bring Jon Snow back to life.

So why would the Red Priests and Priestesses help Daenerys? According to the Express.co.uk article, Daenerys’ role as Breaker of Chains made her have a lot of influence in Volantis. Because of freeing slaves, as she did, she is generally seen in the country of Volantis as being a just queen. If one of the followers of R’hllor in Volantis was able to resurrect Daenerys as Melisandre once did for Jon, that would mean the Mother of Dragons could keep living her life, even if it would be far from Westeros.

Why might some ‘Game of Thrones’ viewers take comfort in this fan theory?

This Game of Thrones fan theory might help some viewers get over the loss of their favorite character. It’s probably easier for many fans to imagine Daenerys living her life somewhere else, happily, rather than actually dying. Especially since her transformation happened so quickly.

With more time to adjust to the change, fans might have accepted Daenerys’ transformation into the Mad Queen. Or perhaps not. It probably depends on the fan. Some fans never would have accepted such a fate for a character they loved.

Especially since Daenerys did end up dying, it’s hard for many fans to come to terms with her fate. However, with this Game of Thrones fan theory, fans don’t have to. Daenerys can live on forever in Volantis and in many fans’ hearts. And that is a beautiful thing.
