Daenerys Targaryen (played by Emilia Clarke) finally faced off against the Night King (Vladimír Furdík) in the eighth season of Game of Thrones. While HBO’s fantasy epic departed from author George R.R. Martin’s original vision, this battle for the ages may have been inspired by events that took place long before the Long Night.
Die-hard fans of Game of Thrones and George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire have drawn strong parallels to the original text in a climactic moment of HBO’s TV adaptation.
Showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss eventually overtook the events of the novels, as fans are still waiting for the next instalment, The Winds of Winter.
Moreover, HBO are currently spinning their own take on the history of House Targaryen to be explored in the upcoming spin-off, House of the Dragon.
However, viewers and readers alike believe the head writers may have already adapted part of Westeros’ dark history for the final season of HBO’s fantasy hit.
A recent article in Screen Rant has outlined some of the pivotal moments in Targaryen history that viewers can expect to see adapted in the new spin-off.
Among them was the fierce battle in the skies between Prince Aemon and his son, or nephew, dependent on the rumours, Prince Daemon Targaryen.
Aemon had lost his grip on the Iron Throne, but in his spite called on his dragon to burn the nearby villages who were still faithful to Daemon’s husband, Queen Rhaenyra.
The rival Targaryens then took their dragons to the skies and fought above the castle of Harrenhal.
While Aemon initially appeared to have the upperhand when his dragon tore into the other’s neck, Daemon was able to leap from his dragon and stab his enemy’s mount in the eye.
Their final confrontation ended with both dragons plummeting from the sky, sending Aemon and Daemon to their deaths.
Daenerys was able to survive for just a bit longer, but the Night King used a similar method to ground the Mother of Dragons in episode three, The Long Night.
Dany’s dragon Drogon was able to dismount the Night King from Viserion, but the devious master of the White Walkers retaliated by throwing the end of his spear into Drogon’s eye.

The series’ last six episodes, as well as the prior two seasons, were largely drawn from the imaginations of Benioff and Weiss, as Martin had yet to release the material needed to complete the series.
Even so, they may have subconsciously included some key moments from Westeros’ history in amongst the climactic final battle.
Furthermore, Aemon’s rage perfectly mirrors Daenerys’ fit of madness in Thrones’ final season which divided so many fans.
Before her death, Daenerys’ effectively brought the war to a close by burning King’s Landing to the ground and destroying the Iron Throne once and for all.
Arriving in 2022, House of the Dragon will finally explain the troubled history of the Targaryens that led to Daenerys’ tragic rise and fall.
It has already been confirmed that The Crown star Matt Smith will be joining the series as Daemon Targaryen, though his rival Aemon has not yet been cast.
If the upcoming prequel series continues beyond its first season, we may finally see some of House Targaryen’s most crucial moments adapted to screen.
