Dawn Taylor (played by Oliva Bromley) was left stunned when her ex-boyfriend Alex (Liam Boyle) made his Emmerdale debut on Monday’s dramatic instalment. The recovering addict has come a long way with her son Lucas (Dexter Ansell) since she split up with his father Alex. However, with Alex reappearing into stake claim on her and Lucas’s life, will Dawn’s addiction issues resurface?
Dawn faces losing her son Lucas again now her ex Alex has returned to her life and the soap’s villain Meena Jutla (Paige Sandhu) has set out to destroy her.
Serial killer Meena has become obsessed with Billy Fletcher (Jay Kontzle) and has been hatching a plan to get Dawn out of the way.
The murderer has tracked down Alex, and on Monday night’s episode of the ITV soap, he introduced himself to Lucas as his real dad.
After Alex locked horns with Billy, Meena accused Dawn of neglecting Lucas and urged Alex to take him away.
Dawn actress Olivia talked to Express.co.uk and other media about Alex’s return to the ITV soap and the dangers it could spell for Dawn’s future.
She explained: “I think Dawn is really shocked and surprised and worried because this is a part of her life she’s put aside.
“And he is a reminder of her past and a dark side of her past.
“So when she sees him she’s really triggered and she’s reminded of all of that.”
Olivia said her character is also worried because he’s the father of her son Lucas.
Speaking about how Alex and Dawn met, Olivia explained: “They were together when they were quite young and in vulnerable places.
“He was the one who got her into heroin and it was a relationship that was built on addiction – it was a love story spurred on by being on drugs.
“She managed to break that cycle and get out and I think she always felt he wasn’t a bad person but they were very bad for each other.”
She said Alex told Dawn he found her through his mother and insisted he’s gotten clean from using drugs.
However, is this all part of a grand scheme to steal Lucas away from a vulnerable Dawn?
In upcoming scenes, Alex is set to leave Dawn devastated after abducting Lucas.
Olivia explained: “It’s Dawn’s worst fear as she’s always worried about Lucas as he’s been her driving force in everything she does.
“And the fact she’s let her guard down and trusted someone, she immediately jumps to the worst conclusion which is part of a mother’s instinct.”
If she can’t get Lucas back, will she return to using drugs in a bid to numb the pain?
Lucas means everything to Dawn so she would find it almost impossible to cope without him.
Emmerdale airs weekdays at 7pm on ITV.
