Max Branning (Jake Wood) has had so many love interests over the years since making his first appearance in EastEnders back in 2006.

The affair he had with Stacey Slater (Lacey Turner) will be one that viewers will remember forever. The reveal — which came at Christmas 2007 — saw Max’s marriage with Tanya (Jo Joyner) ripped to shreds and since then, Max hasn’t really had a stable relationship.

With his exit looming, Jake Wood has revealed who he thinks Max’s one true love is.

‘Definitely Tanya,’ he told Metro.co.uk. ‘It’s obvious, isn’t it? She was the young he’d been with since they were young. She understood him the most out of any of them. Probably the most exciting was Stacey.

‘I think he’ll always have a connection with Stacey. I always thought they might get back together. I thought that would be interesting but that never happened.’

Max currently claims to be in love with Linda Carter (Kellie Bright), and makes it his mission next week to win her back, after she chose to be with husband Mick (Danny Dyer).

Why is it that Linda had a profound effect on Max, though?

Jake said: ‘I’m not sure, I don’t know really — that’s probably a question for the producers and the writers. The grass is always greener, over the years he’s one of those characters that never settled. I think when he joined with Tanya fifteen years ago, that’s where he should’ve stayed. It was obvious he was going to find happiness with Tanya and the girls, Abi and Lauren.

The last of couple of years he’s been very unsettled. He was with Ruby for a while but she dumped him because she wanted an open relationship — which you would’ve thought was perfect for Max Branning, but he wasn’t having any of it!’

‘This weird connection with Linda — I do understand it, she has her own issues with drinking and addiction, and Max had issues with self-harm, so I think they sort of connect there. They had a deep connection through that, but obviously Max thought there was more to it than there actually was.

I think when it came to it Linda was having a bit of a wobble in her marriage, and she wasn’t as fully committed as Max hoped.  I think she probably reminded him most of Tanya in some respects. Tanya was the same, she was sort of a one-man woman, wasn’t she? Linda is as well. There are similarities!’
