The Marvel Cinematic Universe celebrated its 10-year anniversary in 2018 and hasn’t slowed down one bit in the years since. In fact, with its Disney+ rollouts and upcoming films for Phase 4, it’s gearing up quickly after a year without any new MCU content in 2020. Even with that, Tom Holland just shared that he is planning a much-needed break after Spider-Man: No Way Home premieres.
Tom Holland is not under contract anymore after ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ and wants to take a break
In an interview with USA Today on Feb. 24, while promoting his new movie Cherry, Holland shared that he wants to take that break and “travel the world.”
“It’s the first time since I signed on to [Spider-Man: Homecoming] that I don’t have a contract with someone,” Holland shared. “I might go skiing because that’s something I’ve not really been allowed to do because it’s obviously a dangerous sport. I’ve been very careful over the years, which is why I’ve become obsessed with golf because it’s the only sport I can play without getting injured.”
Holland is obviously an active individual by nature, having a background in dancing thanks to his experience in Billy Elliot the Musical in 2008. Plus, he used that and his gymnastics skills to impress the casting directors for his audition for Spider-Man: Homecoming. Plus, have you seen his Lip Sync Battle performance? It makes sense that Holland wants a little more activity in his life post-Spider-Man movies.

Of course, that doesn’t mean he’s completely done with his role as Peter Parker. He’s not saying he’s turning away from the movies, just wants a break since his contract is over for now. He did say that he’s down for more.
“I’m very lucky that I look young and I can continue to play this 17-year-old web-slinger and I will do that for as long as they will have me,” Holland said. “If they want me to make 10 Spider-Man movies, you better believe I will be there.”
But he also shared that he wants to continue to create more movies that are out of that realm too. Like Cherry, which sees Holland in the role of a veteran going suffering from PTSD. Or like The Devil All The Time on Netflix, where Holland starred as Arvin in the sinister, slow-burn thriller.
“But Cherry was our big leap,” he said. “I’m really interested to see the types of doors that it opens and the doors that it closes.”
Back in 2017, Holland said he didn’t want to be stuck to one character
Holland definitely wants to continue to grow, and that’s something he’s always wanted to do. Back in 2017, co-star Zendaya interviewed him for Interview Magazine and Holland shared that he had some goals set up for himself down the line.
“The 20-year goal is to be a film director. The 15-year goal is to win an Oscar. The five-year goal is to just keep enjoying myself,” Holland said. “I really am having the time of my life.”
He shared that he wanted to “stretch himself as an actor” and noted actors like Jake Gyllenhaal, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Meryl Streep that he admires that do just that. And he’s already worked with and befriended Gyllenhaal since then as well.
Holland also went on to say that he wants to branch out, and maybe he will do more of that after his breather following Spider-Man: No Way Home.
“I don’t want to be stuck to one character,” he said. “I think that’s what can happen when you take on a superhero movie. So every conversation I have with my agent is, ‘What have you got for me? What’s next? Who can I play?’”
