It’s a whole new world of possible profits for Disney.
The studio released new takes on two of its classic animated movies, “Aladdin” and “The Lion King,” this summer to boffo box office results. And in the wake of “Aladdin’s” billion dollar worldwide haul, Disney is reportedly considering making a sequel to the live-action hit.
Producer Dan Lin told Comicbook.com that the film’s team is having early conversations around a potential sequel.
“We’d love to,” Lin said of making a follow-up. “People clearly loved the movie and watched it multiple times and we get lots of fan letters and people asking us to make ‘Return [of] Jafar,’ and I can just tell you that we’re in early stages right now, but we’re certainly talking about another movie.”
He added, “Like with ‘Aladdin,’ it will not be a straight remake of any movie that’s been made before, so we’re looking at where’s the best way to go with these characters.”
The original 1992 animated classic had two direct-to-video sequels “Return to Jafar” and “Aladdin and the King of Thieves.”
And considering how the live-action version ends, it’s entirely possible that a sequel could follow the further adventures of Jafar. Or perhaps the globe-trotting journey of Genie (Will Smith) and his new family.
