Hard Chat this is not, and yet Anh Do manages to lead celebrities to places that they might otherwise have their publicists rule out of bounds. In the sitter’s chair, Dannii Minogue appears instantly more relaxed than her polished public persona suggests, musing candidly on her high-profile relationships, but mostly, on a life lived under tabloid scrutiny, forever compared to her pop star sister. As always occurs in this studio, a very real person emerges.

The pressure mounts on our Lisa (Morven Christie), suspended from her detective duties and forced to go undercover when her wayward daughter, Holly (Imogen King, Clique), comes clean about her extra-curricular activities. All while her former rookie sidekick (Taheen Modak) takes over her old gig counselling the most stressed-out family in Lancashire. This is British crime noir at its bleakest and best. The end that is surely nigh should be a killer.

This episode of the sharehouse drama belongs to Stephen Peacocke, as his tradie, Ben, confronts multiple personal issues (and an extra one) that until now have remained hidden. That’s the ingenuity of this series. Characters that appear summed up at face value slowly reveal more layers. The cast is, without exception, excellent. This is sophisticated local drama in the same league as far better financed US tearjerkers such as This is Us.
