Michelle (played by Kym Marsh) is currently unaware Ali (James Burrows) is suffering from a drug addiction on Coronation Street, with tonight’s double-bill of the ITV soap showing the possible deadly implications of his actions. However, having split from girlfriend Maria Connor (Samia Longchambon) as a result of his ongoing problems, could it be another suitor in the form of Gary (Mikey North) the young doctor should be worried about?

As the drama got underway tonight, Michelle was desperate to get fiancé Robert Preston (Tristan Gemmill) to agree to a holiday abroad.

At the same time, Ali had agreed to look after Maria’s young son Liam Connor (Charlie Wrenshall) while she was out the flat.

After telling Robert and surrogate brother Ryan Connor (Ryan Prescott) he’d stopped taking his pills, the doctor slipped a few whilst keeping an eye on the youngster and fell asleep in the process.

Having put a pizza in the oven to cook, Liam was put in jeopardy but was saved by Gary who broke into the flat when he heard the fire alarm blaring out.

In light of the almost fatal incident, Ryan gave Ali some tough love and told him he needed to really think about his actions having put his girlfriend’s son in grave danger.

The young doctor took the advice as a nod to break up with Maria, who was left furious with her boyfriend for breaking up with her after he confessed his love for her just hours before.

As she drowned her sorrows in the Rovers Return, the hairdresser faced a heated confrontation with Michelle, who was still none-the-wiser as to why her son had really broken up with his girlfriend.

It was once again Gary who stepped into action to take Maria out the tense situation and offered her some support as she tried to get her head around her recent break up.

The Weatherfield villain took Maria’s hands in his but as he hid, the pair were noticed by his ex-girlfriend Sarah Platt (Tina O’Brien) who has her own reservations about the loan shark.

After Maria had left, Sarah quizzed Gary about his intentions towards the hairdresser, leaving him curious to the motive behind her interrogation.

“I don’t care what you do, as long as you don’t do it with Maria because she’s a good person,” the Underworld factory worker warned.

“To be honest, I was just been a shoulder to cry on, but now you mention it, she’s a good person. Maybe she’s just what I need,” Gary snidely remarked.

It has already been confirmed the villain and Maria will strike up a romance in the coming weeks, but Ali may cause some issues for the pair.

Upcoming episodes could see Ali try and fight for his relationship with Maria as he realises the mistake he made in swiftly dumping her.

Having already claimed two lives on the cobbles, Gary isn’t the kind of character to back off gracefully and the young doctor’s interference in his blossoming romance could see the villain’s rage return.

Could the loan shark really kill Ali to ensure he is given full scope to be with Maria following his break-up from Sarah earlier this year?

Michelle was only reunited with her biological son last year after the young doctor spent years resenting his mother for handing him back to his Ryan’s paternal family and choosing to bring up the Weatherfield troublemaker instead.

Maria struck a chord as when she was brawling with Michelle, she told the mother-of-two: “Congratulations on raising an emotionally stunted man child. In fact no, you didn’t raise him, did you?

“Instead of raising one son well, you’ve done half a job with two of them,” the heartbroken hairdresser raged.

With the former Rovers barmaid soon to depart from the cobbles, could it be Ali’s death could be the catalyst to see her turn her back on her home?

Coronation Street continues Wednesday at 7.30pm on ITV.
