William Roache who stars as Coronation Street legend Ken Barlow joined Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford on the This Morning sofa earlier today. The ITV soap stalwart discussed his time on the soap and made a shocking revelation about how things could have been very different on the cobbles.

The soap star remarked: “I love it I enjoy going to work 60 years have gone like that it’s quite frightened.”

Eamonn asked: “And you don’t look back, look at your son Linus and see the big productions he’s in and you don’t look back and think ‘I could have taken a different path, I could have been in the movies, I could have done other things.’”

“Yes because when it was first offered I didn’t want to do it, I’d just got the lead in a play,” William said.

“In 1959 the play of the week was the highlight of the week and I had the lead as a young soldier in Germany.

“So this was coming out and my agent said ‘Granada want you I think it’s a little comedy.’”

William explained he told his agent: “I don’t want to do it.”

But his agent advised him to do pilot which he did and then the actor was told Coronation Street wanted him.

His agent told him: “Well think of this you’re going out twice a week in Coronation Street and you’ve got a play after you’ve been seen what a shop window that is and it’s only going to run for 11 weeks.”

Little did William and his agent know the soap would go on to become one of the most loved shows on TV.

Earlier in the interview, William praised co-stars Rob Mallard, who plays Daniel Osbourne and Katie McGlynn, who plays Sinead Tinker.

He remarked Sinead’s cancer diagnosis and subsequent death affected both him and a lot of the cast members.

Ken’s son, Daniel was left heartbroken over the death of his wife, Sinead.
