Good Morning Britain has updated viewers on the condition of Kate Garraway’s husband Derek as he battles coronavirus in intensive care.

Ben Shephard, who is filling in for Piers Morgan who is experiencing symptoms of the virus himself, wished Kate a happy birthday while sending love from her co-stars amid the difficult time.

Ben, 45, who is presenting alongside Susanna Reid, revealed how they are still praying for Derek’s recovery after he tested positive for Covid-19 last month.

He told viewers on Monday morning’s show: "I wanna say happy birthday to Kate, who turns 40-13 today."

Susanna Reid added: "She doesn't look a day over 25."

Ben then joked: "No, after a lot of make up."

The presenter then added more seriously: “She is with her family and keeping everything crossed, obviously, because Derek is still critically ill but we just want to say happy birthday, Kate, however you can celebrate today.

"I'm sure that Darcey and Billy have got a cake or something, but we're sending lots and lots of love."

Susanna added: "Yes, huge love to you and your family, of course."

On Thursday, following the weekly Clap For Carers, Kate took to social media to share an update on her husband as she praised NHS workers who have been helping him while he’s in hospital.

The I’m A Celebrity star wrote: “So much to be grateful for tonight. Derek is still with us but what a battle it is.

“So grateful too for our amazing #nhs doing so much for Derek everyday – wonderful to see all the support for them & our key workers every Thursday. We can’t thank them enough can we ? So brave.”

Last week Ben revealed how she has been able to see him in hospital and has been speaking and playing music to Derek.

Ben said on last Friday’s show: "She also wanted to share that she's been able to speak to Derek in the evenings in a coma.

"We had some guests on last week and I think a lot of hospitals are doing this, they are offering families the chance to speak to their loved ones who can't respond because they're in comas.

"But she's been able to share music with him, to talk to him and just support him."
