“Back to the Future” is taking a DeLorean to the stage in 2020.
The long-awaited musical based on the classic 1985 film will debut at the Manchester Opera House in the U.K. on February 20, 2020. After an initial three-month run, it will move to London’s West End, according to Playbill.
“Back to the Future: The Musical” draws from a book by the film’s co-writer Bob Gale and a score by Glen Ballard and original film composer Alan Silvestri. Tony winner John Rando is directing, with Chris Bailey choreographing. “Back to the Future” director Robert Zemeckis is attached as a producer.
The show will also feature classic tunes, like Chuck Berry’s “Johnny B. Goode” and The News’ “The Power of Love.”
Olly Dobson will star as Marty McFly, the role made famous by Michael J. Fox. The role of the eccentric but brilliant Dr. Emmett Brown, played by Christopher Lloyd in the movie, has not been announced.
“Bob Zemeckis and I have been trying to get this project off the ground for years, but good things take time and finally, the time is right,” said Gale, according to Playbill.
“We’re thrilled that we can retell our story on stage in a brand-new way, and we’re certain that ‘Back to the Future fans’ all over the world will share our enthusiasm. In the words of Marty McFly, ‘your kids are gonna love it’ — and so will you and your parents.”
