If it seems like we are in a neverending cycle of Bachelor shows, it’s because we are in the middle of a perpetual onslaught of Bachelor shows. But at least they’re interesting, right?
Right now, we get to watch some of our Bachelor favorites find love while some of them crash and burn (looking at you Blake Horstmann) on Bachelor in Paradise. And the ones who don’t fall in love usually at least get drunk on the beach and make fools of themselves or get into an argument with someone along the way. It’s all amazing television.
What are the rules of ‘Paradise’?
Unlike The Bachelor or The Bachelorette, the contestants don’t come on the show to pine after one person. At the start of the season, a number of Bachelor and Bachelorette contestants are brought onto a beach in Mexico to try to find love with one another. But, of course, it can’t be that simple. Each week, more contestants are brought onto the show so that there is always an uneven number of men and women. The group that is in the minority must hand out roses to one person they are each interested in. Whoever doesn’t get a rose at each rose ceremony has to go back home.
Why isn’t there a prize at the end?
Most reality dating shows, like the wildly popular Love Island, have a cash prize at the end of the show or at least some incentive to make the contestants want to endure the drama on the show and potential for public humiliation.
But Bachelor in Paradise promises contestants nothing at the end of the show other than the opportunity to get engaged.
Why is that?
Probably because a lot of them make money throughout the show. According to Reality Steve, the amount that contestants make differs.
“Some [contestants] get paid per day they are there, some get paid per episode they’re on, and some get paid a flat rate (usually alumni).” He even said that stars could make from $7,000 to $15,000 for being on the show back in season one.
This is a stark contrast to how much the contestants earn for being on The Bachelor or The Bachelorette, which is a whopping $0.
The ability to earn money on Paradise is one huge incentive for going.
“After Paradise, I definitely felt more like there was a balance of how much I put in versus how much I was getting out — not only with my relationship, that was a positive experience, but also being able to make money,” Bachelor in Paradise alum Taylor Nolan told Money.
How much does it cost to go on the show?
Breaking into the Bachelor franchise is notoriously expensive, especially for the women. You need an outfit for every day and a dress for every cocktail party and rose ceremony, on top of whatever makeup and hair supplies you need.
Nolan said that she spent $1,000 to $2,000 on clothes and makeup for Nick Viall’s season of The Bachelor and ended up going home on week five.
Jillian Harris famously said that she remortgaged her house to go on the show and spent around $8,000 on clothing for The Bachelor. Luckily, she went on to become the Bachelorette.
“The girls do have to bring all of their own clothing and of course, they want to be wearing the best clothes EVER to be seen on TV in,” Harris wrote on her blog.
