A Discovery of Witches fans are bracing themselves for the release of season three on Friday 7 January on Sky Max and NOW. Sadly, the new season is bittersweet, as it is also the final series of the historical fantasy drama. Some viewers were hoping for more from the saga, but Sky has confirmed the story ends here.

Why is A Discovery of Witches ending?

Since premiering in 2018, A Discovery of Witches has gone on to be one of Sky’s most popular series.

Sadly, the network confirmed last year that season three would be the last, bringing the saga to a close.

While some fans were hoping the show to last a little longer, it should come as no surprise to the majority.

The show is based on a series of books by author Deborah Harkness, with each season adapting one book from the All Souls Trilogy.

Season three is bringing the third and final book to the small screen, telling its tale over the course of seven episodes.

As such, it seems it was always the intention of the showrunners to adapt the books faithfully within the confines of three seasons.

Of course, some fans are still hoping for more, and it wouldn’t be impossible for Sky to consider a continuation.

While there are only three original books, Harkness did write a fourth – Time’s Convert.

The story is more of a spin-off, rather than a direct continuation, as it shifts the focus away from Matthew Clairemont (played by Matthew Goode) and Diana Bishop (Teresa Palmer).

Instead, it picks up with Marcus Whitmore (Edward Bluemel) and Phoebe Taylor (Adelle Leonce) now living in contemporary times.

It follows Phoebe’s transformation into a vampire, as she decides to join Marcus in the darkness of his being.

There has been no word from Sky, the showrunners, or stars of the series this spin-off is even being considered.

As such, viewers should accept that season three of A Discovery of Witches is the true end to the series, at least for now.

What is season three about?

The third season has been highly anticipated by fans, as it will be finally answering some of the burning questions left open after seasons one and two.

The official synopsis reads: “In the third and final instalment of this spellbinding adaptation of Deborah Harkness’ All Souls trilogy, vampire Matthew and witch Diana return from 1590 to find tragedy at Sept-Tours.”

For fans that have already read the books, the show will once again be staying true to the source material.

However, for those in the dark, Sky is staying deliberately vague with the plot, as it is set to be a jam-packed season.

Speaking exclusively to Expess.co.uk, Phoebe star Adelle Leonce teased the season won’t waste any time in delivering the goods for fans.

Leonce explained: “It’s quick, there’s a lot of information; the book is huge, I do not know how the writers were able to condense it down.

“I just think it’s a powerhouse of a season. It’s literally got everything, there are so many wonderful characters that we get introduced to in season three.”

A Discovery of Witches will premiere on January 7 on Sky Max and NOW. A USA release date is yet to be confirmed.
