After what’s felt like the longest Winter, Memorial Day Weekend 2019 is finally here! Following months of no vacation days, we can’t wait to kick off the unofficial start to Summer with a well-deserved three day weekend. As you soak up your extra 24 hours of bliss, why not kick back and relax with some amazing movies? We’ve rounded up five great films for your enjoyment, now streaming on Netflix.

Pan’s Labyrinth

If you’re in desperate need of a good cry, this masterpiece of a film will do the job in a pinch. Set just five years after the Spanish Civil War, the film follows Ofelia, a young girl who loses herself in a fantasy world to cope with the everyday pain and violence around her. With equal parts drama and fantasy, this tragically beautiful film will stick with you long after Memorial Day Weekend is over.

Mulan

There’s a reason that this Disney classic is one of the best. Not only is this film hilarious (thanks to the amazing comedic talents of Eddie Murphy), it’s also a great lesson in challenging gender expectations and going against the status quo.

The animated film follows Mulan, a young woman growing up in China, who risks her life by taking her father’s place in the Chinese Army when he is drafted for war. A feel-good film with some great musical numbers, it’s a movie that the whole family can enjoy, rather than just tolerate. Plus, with the live-action version of the film set to release in 2020, it’s a good idea to brush up on the original.

Hush

Who doesn’t love a good scare? Hush is a great choice for those who wish Halloween was always in season. Hush follows protagonist Maddie, a deaf and mute woman struggling to defend herself from a menacing serial killer. Though the film is far from your typical, gory, slasher, horror film, Hush delivers beautifully on nail-biting anticipation. A wonderful thriller, this film has a resourceful and intelligent heroine that we can all root for.

Black Panther

Looking for some superhero screen time this MDW? Look no further than Black Panther. Marvel’s action-packed film has everything you could possibly want from a movie. A star-studded cast (Lupita Nyong’o, Michael B. Jordan, and Letitia Wright to name a few), outstanding graphics, stunning costumes, a complex villain, and a fantastic plot that will keep you guessing.

The record-breaking film centers around newly coronated King T’Challa, as he assumes the responsibilities of the throne following his father’s tragic death. Watching this film and will have you yelling “Wakanda forever!” in no time.

About Time

If you’re feeling the love this weekend, but want something that’s a little bit more atypical, then About Time is the choice for you. This film has many of the elements you’ve come to expect from romance movies (i.e. the ever-present “meet cute”), but somehow still manages to subvert them.

The 2013 film follows Tim, who learns on his 21st birthday that he has inherited the ability to travel through time. A romantic at heart, Tim uses his new powers to find the woman of his dreams. Also starring everyone’s favorite Mean Girls alum, Rachel McAdams, this sweet film explores love in a multitude of different capacities.

Netflix & chill

This holiday, skip the online shopping and instead Netflix & chill out with these great films. Whether you’re looking for comedy, drama, horror, romance, or action, there’s something here for you to enjoy. Too busy traveling this weekend to indulge? Use Netflix’s “Add to My List” feature and check them out when you have time.
