GOLFING hothead Matt Wallace will be under the spotlight again when he tees off alongside Tiger Woods in the first two rounds of the Open.

Wallace had to apologise to the European Tour for slamming a club into the green when he finished runner-up at the British Masters.

And then he had to say sorry to his caddie for ranting at him after blowing another chance of winning at the BMW International.

He will need to be on his best behaviour as his draw alongside 15 time Major champion Woods and 2018 Masters champion Patrick Reed will attract massive crowds at Portrush.

They tee off at 3.10pm on Thursday.

Wallace, 29, rocketed to prominence by winning three times on the European Tour last year, almost forcing his way onto the Ryder Cup team.

MCILROY GOES FOR FIFTH MAJOR

That took his haul to ten professional victories in the last three years – six of them on the third tier Alps Tour, where he was plying his trade in 2016 before storming up the world rankings.

He continued his impressive progress by claiming a share of third place at the USPGA Championship two months ago, and followed up by finishing 12th at the US Open.

Rory McIlroy begins his quest for an overdue fifth Major at 10.09 alongside Ryder Cup team-mate Paul Casey and newly-crowned US Open champion Gary Woodland.

Portrush-born Graeme McDowell, the 2010 US Open champion, tees off with Henrik Stenson and Xander Schauffele at 9.14

As expected 2011 Open champion Darren Clarke – ‘Mr Portrush’ because of his close links with the course – will hit the opening tee shot at 6.35am.

Another giant of the European game, Colin Montgomerie, was handed the same honour when the Open went to his home course, Troon, three years ago.
