Darts star Nathan Aspinall is facing punishment after making a lewd gesture behind the back of opponent Jermaine Wattimena as the pair walked off stage during their Grand Slam of Darts second round match.

The Asp ran out comfortable 10-6 winner over the Dutch qualifier to book his quarter-final spot, but during the second break the world number 12 was caught off guard making a lewd gesture live on Sky Sports. Aspinall immediately noticed the error of his ways nervously laughing and motioned for the camera to stop filming him.

After a commercial break Sky Sports commentator Rod Studd apologised to viewers for any offence the gesture might have caused.

Asked if he could expect a Darts Regulation Authority (DRA) fine, Aspinall admitted: “Yeah, probably – but it was no gesture at Jermaine. It was purely the fact that's how I played in the at second session."

The Asp has hit form at the Grand Slam of Darts knocking Peter Wright out of the competition in the group stages.

Despite a good start against Wattimena the English star allowed his rival to draw back to 6-4.

Aspinall admitted he was frustrated with his performance in the second session and that the gesture was related to that and not his opposition.

"The start was really good, the middle was really poor and I closed the game out well," Aspinall added. "That was my assessment.

"I came out really well and felt really good but came out after the break and it was rubbish. He came back to 6-4 so I knew I had to get back to my best and close the game out.

"I think I was too relaxed and thought I had won the game after the first break and that is a poor attitude to have. When I walked off after the second break I was having a word with myself."

Despite his explanation a Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) statement said that the gesture was being refereed to the DRA.

"The video will be referred to the DRA, who are our disciplinary body," the statement said. “They will determine if any offence has been committed and apply any appropriate punishment.”
