BRAZILIAN side Santos have hit back at pundit Jamie Carragher after he labelled Pele’s goal record a “bit of a myth.”

The former Liverpool defender put himself in the firing line after questioning the legend’s goal scoring totals during studio banter on Monday Night Football earlier this week.

Pele’s former club put the boot in by tweeting alongside a photo of him holding the three World Cups he won with Brazil.

They wrote: “The King is deeply concerned by the dispute about his greatness and his unbeatable numbers. Don’t cry.”

The tweet was written in Portuguese besides the “don’t cry” that was in English, possibly digging at England’s one trophy, a crying emoji was in the tweet too.

This is the second time in recent months Carragher has been called out by a South American after he revealed Lionel Messi called him a “donkey” after criticising his move to PSG.

Former Argentina international Nestor Gorosito labelled the ex-England man “rubbish” and Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema claimed “he knows nothing about football.”

Carragher, 44, joked about Pele’s record after he was discussing Cristiano Ronaldo’s hat-trick for Manchester United at the weekend.

This saw the Portugal international officially crowned as the all-time leading goal scorer in men’s football.

Pele, 81, netted 643 official goals for Santos with his overall tally featuring Brazil and New York Cosmos strikes standing at 767.

However, back in December 2020, Santos claimed their star man had actually scored 1,091 goals.

He is a Santos legend having spent most of his career with them, he even won FIFA Player of the Century in 2000 sharing the award with Diego Maradona.

Pele himself has said he scored 1,283 times including friendlies.

He has not responded to Ronaldo overtaking his official record as he’s been in and out of hospital over the last few months following being diagnosed with a colon tumour.
