Napoli, who had been on a 13-win streak, lost after late goals from Mo Salah and Darwin Nunez.
It made it five wins in a row for the Reds in Europe which is in sharp contrast to their wobbly domestic form.
Liverpool could face any of Bayern Munich, Porto, Real Madrid, RB Leipzig, PSG or Benfica in the last 16 subject to tonight's results.

Liverpool and Tottenham finished their Champions League group campaigns with a flourish last night.
Spurs qualified top of Group of Group D thanks to a 95th minute winner from Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, having been on their way out of the competition at one point when Chancel Mbemba headed Marseille ahead.
The Reds meanwhile bounced back from the weekend's defeat against Leeds to beat Napoli 2-0 at Anfield, ending the Italian side's 21-game unbeaten run in all competitions.
Manchester City and Chelsea are in action this evening.
Both sides are already through, but Erling Haaland is set to miss the home clash against Sevilla, while Chelsea host Dinamo Zagreb.
Elsewhere, new Aston Villa boss Unai Emery reportedly wants to sign Real Madrid forward Eden Hazard.
The ex-Chelsea ace has struggled since his mega move to the Bernabeu in 2018.
Spanish outlet Defensa Central claim Emery wants to build his side around the 31-year-old, who has less than two years remaining on his Real Madrid deal.

With the game 1-1 going into added time, Spurs looked as though they were going through in second place behind Eintracht Frankfurt.
But a 95th minute stunner from Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg saw the visitors into the hat for the knockouts as group winners.

After defeat to Leeds in the Premier League on Saturday, Liverpool have responded by coming out on top against Europe’s form side.
The Reds beat Napoli 2-0 thanks to a late goals from Mohamed Salah and Darwin Nunez.
It's Napoli's first defeat in 21 games.
Both sides finish the group stage on 15 points and safely through to the knockout stages after winning five out of their six games.
But it’s Napoli who go through in top spot thanks to their 4-1 win over Liverpool in the reverse fixture.

Chelsea boss Graham Potter knocked back suggestions he is under pressure following the 4-1 drubbing at the hands of old side Brighton.
The Blues are currently on a three game winless run in the league.
But Potter said: "Pressure? From one game, you mean? In my job, or where I'm sat, you've got to be careful what you listen to.
"People can talk and say whatever. It's just part of life.
"You understand at a club like this that you're only 90 minutes away from a crisis, and you have to put things into perspective."
He added: "Whatever people say from the outside – there's always opinions, there's always people that don't like you, there's always people that will have a different view of how the situation is.

Klopp going nowhere soon
Jurgen Klopp has NO intention of leaving Liverpool, his agent has confirmed.
The German gaffer has endured a miserable start to the campaign, with his side winning just four out of 12 Prem games.
But the 55-year-old is not planning on going anywhere just yet.
His advisor, Marc Kosicke, told Sky Germany that Liverpool chiefs were expecting a hangover this season after coming two wins away from an unprecedented quadruple last term.

Former Premier League striker Gabby Agbonlahor has claimed Leandro Trossard would be a smart addition for three of the Prem's top clubs.
The Brighton ace has sparked rumours of a move to a Big Six club after his stunning start to the season.
Belgian international Trossard has netted seven goals in just 12 Prem games this campaign.
And Agbonlahor told talkSPORT: "He’s improved so much. Adding goals as well, he’s a threat.

Atalanta midfielder Ruslan Malinovskyi is a January transfer target for Tottenham, reports suggest.
Italian newspaper Il Giorno claim Spurs have contacted Atalanta's head of recruitment, Lee Congerton, over a potential deal.
The 29-year-old has started just four Serie A games this season and is on the lookout for more regular opportunities.
It's said the Italians want around £13million to part ways with the Ukrainian international.
