Former Liverpool and Leeds defender Dominic Matteo being treated in hospital after operation on brain tumour

Former Liverpool and Leeds defender Dominic Matteo is being treated in hospital after undergoing an operation on a brain tumour.

He is out of intensive care after going in for surgery on Monday. 

The 45-year-old played for Liverpool and Leeds and was capped by Scotland in a 17-year playing career.

Liverpool released a statement on Saturday morning to lend their support to their academy graduate.

‘The thoughts of everyone at the club are with Dom, his family and friends and we will be offering our support to them throughout this difficult time,’ Liverpool said.

‘A popular member of the Liverpool side in the 1990s and a regular pundit and commentator on LFCTV in recent years, Matteo made his debut for the Reds in October 1993.

‘We wish Dom a full and speedy recovery and will offer any support we can to his wife and family.

Matteo began his career at Liverpool, where he made 155 appearances in seven years

The defender was part of the Leeds side that reached the Champions League semi-finals

Leeds also sent their best wishes, tweeting: ‘The thoughts of everyone at #LUFC are with our former captain @Dominicmatteo21 and his family after he was taken seriously ill earlier this week. Stay strong Dom!’

Matteo made his senior Liverpool debut in October 1993 and made 155 appearances in seven years before joining Leeds in 2000.

He was a regular at Elland Road, playing 146 times in four years. He helped David O’Leary’s side into the Champions League semi-finals in 2001, scoring a famous goal against AC Milan on the way.

But he was part of the side that was relegated in 2004 before moving on to Blackburn and then Stoke before hanging up his boots in 2009.

He was capped six times by Scotland despite having earned Under 21 caps for England.
