Princess Diana was so many different things to so many different people, and her tragic and untimely death greatly affected millions around the world. In addition to being a wonderful mother to her two sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, she was a humanitarian, a role model, a source of comfort to those in need, and just a lovely, warm person overall.

Although Diana was just about always seen with a smile on her face, the sad truth is that she wasn’t as happy as she appeared to be. Behind palace doors, Diana’s life was growing increasingly more difficult. Her marriage fell apart due to different issues, mainly infidelity. The princess was also struggling with personal problems, and to say that her life as one of the most famous women in the world was hard is a huge understatement.

Many royal fans might think that marrying a prince is the ultimate fairy tale, but for Lady Diana Spencer, it was anything but that. So, was Princess Diana already ‘fatally damaged’ before she ever married Prince Charles?

Diana was extremely young at the time of her royal wedding

Charles and Diana’s royal wedding was one of the most-watched events of our time, as just about everyone wanted to say that they saw this moment of history as it was happening. There was a delighted gasp around the world when Diana stepped out in her iconic gown, with its 25-foot train and sparkling tiara as she made her way down the aisle to her waiting prince.

However, while many brides are well into their twenties or thirties when they get married, Diana herself was barely out of her teens. Having just turned 20 years old, according to PopSugar, the young bride married Charles after only going out on a few dates.

She may not have been prepared for the pressure of royal life

In her own words: "Not a moment to breathe. I find the endless receptions [on the first royal tour to Australia in 1983] quite difficult, as people tend to ask extraordinarily personal questions. When trying to drag a sentence out [from children chewing bubble gum], all we actually see is a bright pink thing, turning round and round, like a washing machine inside! I am finding it very difficult to cope with the pressures of being the Princess of Wales. I have learnt a lot in the last few months, and feel I am doing my job better now than I was before. I have matured a lot recently and got used to coping with things. But when they [the press] write something horrible, I get a horrible feeling right here… in my chest."

Being as young as she was when she married into the royal family, Diana may not have been prepared for how she would have to live each day. After becoming the wife of the future king, Diana found herself being constantly followed and photographed with virtually no privacy. It was something that she was not prepared for and didn’t enjoy one bit.

According to Express, constant attention was one aspect of royal life that Diana was never able to get used to. Her life was always under scrutiny, and more than anything, Diana wanted to live without interference.

Diana had a pretty rough life

11 June 1992: Princess Diana looked visibly emotional and struggled to hold back tears during her visit to open the Queens Court Hospice in Southport. At the opening ceremony, fundraiser Bill Davidson made a speech, speaking highly of the princess: "I know I speak for everyone when I say that in all that you do, you reflect so very sincerely the philosophy of tender loving care". The speech was followed by applaud from all patients and staff, making her fight back the tears. The princess was at her worst after the release of scripts from Andrew Morton's biography book in the newspapers, but the public sympathized with her ■ 11 يونيو 1992: خلال زيارتها لمدينة ساوثبورت لافتتاح دار كوينز كورت لرعاية المسنين، بدت اﻷميرة ديانا شاحبة وتعيسة، لكنها لم تتمكن من إخفاء دموعها بعد أن استمعت لخطاب أحد رجال اﻷعمال المهتمين باﻷعمال الخيرية، ويدعى بيل ديفيدسون، الذي قال عنها: "أنا أعلم بأنني أتحدث باسم الجميع عندما أقول بأن دعمك يا سمو اﻷميرة واهتمامك بالعمل اﻹنساني يعكس مدى إخلاصك، وابتكارك لفلسفة إنسانية خاصة بك تعكس مدى حبك للعطاء والرعاية اﻹنسانية."

It may have been hard to tell from observing Diana, who was soft-spoken and always perfectly poised, but she had a pretty rough life. Harper’s Bazaar reports that her parents divorced when she was only 7 years old, and it was a difficult thing for her to go through.

To make matters worse, Diana had extremely low self-confidence, according to The List. She also had to deal with issues such as bulimia and depression throughout her life, and keeping those issues secret made them considerably harder.

Was Diana already ‘fatally damaged’ before marrying Prince Charles?

A royal author certainly seems to think so. According to Express, Penny Junor felt that Diana was “out of her depth” when she joined the royal family and was not ready for such a high-profile life.

During her childhood, Diana experienced such a great deal of loss, rejection, and sadness, and Junor wrote in her book “The Firm” that it fatally damaged her as a result. As most fans are aware, Diana wasn’t welcomed into the royal family with open arms.

Her difficult childhood didn’t prepare her for her complicated marriage and life in the spotlight. No matter what, we will always love and miss Diana, and look back with great memories of all she did.
