THOUSANDS of families have just weeks left to apply for free cash to spend on groceries, energy bills and other essentials.

Local councils are handing out grants to hard-up households but applications close at the end of the month.

The grants are part of the £500million Household Support Fund, which was launched to help struggling Brits with bills and food shopping.

The eligibility criteria and support available depends on where you live and financial assistance could come as a cash grant or vouchers.

For example, Runnymede Council in Surrey is giving residents up to £800 to pay for food, heating, white goods and essential repairs.

Those in Bromsgrove and Redditch can apply for the HSF through Citizens Advice, with the maximum amount awarded per household £500.

Barnsley residents can get up to £200 to spend in supermarkets, including Aldi, Asda, Morrisons and Tesco.

You should contact your council to find out what's on offer in your local area.

Some schemes have already closed despite the nationwide deadline of March 31.

For example, East Yorkshire, Elmbridge, and Nottingham councils are no longer accepting applications as their pot of cash has already been used up.

Others, such as North Yorkshire, are closing before the end of this month so you might need to act fast to get the cash.

Check with your local council to find out if there are grants still available and how to apply.

What other help is available?

If you've already missed out on your area's Household Support Fund or you aren't eligible, there is other help available.

First of all you should make sure you're getting all the benefits you're entitled to.

You can use an online benefits calculator to check you're not missing out.

If you're struggling with energy bills or housing costs you should let your supplier or landlord know as soon as possible as they might be able to help.

Energy suppliers including British Gas have launched emergency funds to help consumers cover gas and electricity costs.

Get in touch with charities such as Citizens Advice, Turn2Us and Stepchange if you're worried about your finances.
