“Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion” has it all: extended dream sequences, interpretive dance, a pair of pitch-perfect comedic performances from leads Mira Sorvino and Lisa Kudrow — and really, really good clothes.
Created by Mona May — the costume designer behind another little fashion-famous film called “Clueless” — the 1997 cult classic’s wardrobe is marked by glossy fabrics, itty-bitty skirts and a “fun, frisky use of color,” to quote one key character.
Those same styles are all present and accounted for in May’s new collaboration with online vintage boutique Thrilling, which is full of one-of-a-kind pieces inspired by the looks from her movies and sourced from shops across the country.
Priced from $30 to $200, the collection includes shiny jumpsuits, animal prints and metallic matching sets the Tucson-bred, LA-based BFFs would totally wear while busting moves at the club (or, let’s face it, even to the gym).
Below, the costume designer looks back at some of the most memorable fashion moments from “Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion.”
ON ROMY AND MICHELE’S MATCHING METALLIC MINIDRESSES: “The costumes really show the journey of the character, so every detail is so important. In this case, Mira’s always the masculine ‘boy’ [of the relationship], so she got the blue, and Lisa’s always the feminine [one] with the boas and sparkles, so she got the pink. They wanted to make sure it was very simple, so their silhouettes were the same.
“Using the spandex, shiny material was kind of unusual; people didn’t really make dresses out of that material at the time, [except] maybe ravers. We hand-painted the little ‘Star Trek’ [emblem] on Mira. And we bedazzled the shoes, gluing them the night before. When they come out in that scene, it’s just like, ‘Here we are, we’re creative, we made these.'”

ON THE ’80S PROM LOOKS: “These were vintage pieces, Betsey Johnson dresses. I’m a kid of the ’80s, so Madonna, she was the trailblazer of the time. All her antics allowed us to be ourselves as well. So that was kind an homage, in that scene: They may make fun of you, but you can be who you are and express yourself. Using those Madonna looks was really [to send] a strong message. Dance to your own drum! Swing your hair! Be sexy!”

ON THE “BUSINESSWOMAN SPECIAL” SUITS: “It was great designing these costumes as well. I made Lisa’s suit kind of low-cut and her little skirt was quite mini, then Mira had the pinstriped men’s suit jacket with just little bit of a camisole under with more of a knee-length skirt — because she was the smarter one, she always said.”
