Princess Diana is being honored with a statue unveiling at Kensington Palace on what would have been her 60th birthday. Her sons — Prince William and Prince Harry — are reuniting for the event that will put a spotlight on the fractured royal family.
But despite their feud, her former chef Darren McGrady says, ‘The Boss will still be looking down on both and feeling proud of ‘her boys’.’
Princess Diana’s sons have barely spoken in recent years
William and Harry were extremely close growing up. They were just 15 and 12, respectively, when their mom passed away on August 31,1997, in a Paris car crash. Experiencing such a traumatic event together brought the young royals even closer together. But that once-strong brotherly bond has been broken.
According to Express, in the wake of Megxit the two brothers have barely spoken. The only time they’ve been seen together since Harry walked away from his life as a senior royal was at Prince Philip’s funeral in April.
“I love William to bits.He’s my brother. We’ve been through hell together. I mean, we have a shared experience. But we’re on different paths,” Harry told Oprah Winfrey.
Prince Harry has been speaking out against his family
Harry and his wife, Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, started criticizing the royal family earlier this year. They first spoke out during a tell-all interview with Winfrey, where the couple made claims of racism.
The duke also spoke out in the Apple TV show The Me You Can’t See, where he shared that his family never spoke about his mother’s death. He said his father, Prince Charles, expected him and William to deal with the press attention and mental distress on their own.
“My father used to say to me when I was younger, he used to say to both William and I, ‘Well it was like that for me so it’s going to be like that for you,’” Harry recalled.

July 1, 2021, would have been Princess Diana’s 60th birthday. To mark the occasion, William and Harry will be part of a ceremony at Kensington Palace to unveil a statue in her honor.
But as former royal chef Darren McGrady points out, the event will most likely see William and Harry following in their parents’ footsteps.
“Oh, the irony. “William and Harry attending an event that neither will be comfortable the other one is there,” McGrady wrote on Twitter. “Just like their parents Prince Charles and Princess Diana a few years earlier. So sad. The Boss will still be looking down on both and feeling proud of ‘her boys’.”
Could the future of the royal family be in question?
According to CBS Sunday Morning, the British press is treating Harry and Meghan like “pariahs,” making it incredibly difficult for the prince to return to London for the statue unveiling.
But royal expert Ayesha Hazarika says that many royal subjects are on Harry and Meghan’s side. She claims the royal family’s reputation has been damaged by the Sussex’s allegations.
There’s also a lot of questions about the future of the royal family and their role in a democratic society.
Hazarika noted that the family is missing Harry and Meghan, who were royal rockstars. And, they are trying to fill the void left by the couple with a rebranding of Prince William and Kate, Duchess of Cambridge.
Prince Harry says he has a lot of Princess Diana in him
Harry says that he still doesn’t understand why his father wanted him and William to suffer after their mother’s death. The duke says he was told to “play the game” and things would get better. But that never happened. Instead, Harry says he was trapped.
“I’ve got a hell of a lot of my mum in me. The only way to free yourself and break out is to tell the truth,” Harry said.
“I was trapped, but I didn’t know I was trapped. But the moment that I met Meg, and our worlds collided in the most amazing of ways and then [I began] to see how trapped within the system, like, the rest of my family are. My father and my brother, they are trapped. They don’t get to leave, and I have huge compassion for that.”
