1. Keeping blood sugar balanced

Too much eating and drinking and not enough sleep can unbalance your blood sugar levels.

‘Keeping this under control is one of the best things you can do this bank holiday weekend. Unbalanced blood sugar levels will make you feel bad – there will be energy dips, cravings, your mood will change.

‘If you want to feel great, be conscious of what you are eating. Protein is really great for blood sugar control, try to ensure that you are having some with breakfast, lunch and dinner.

‘B-vitamins will also help you with this, so try to consume foods like grains, nuts and rye bread, as these are all packed full.

‘Ultimately if your blood sugar isn’t balanced, you’re not going to feel your best – this is the building block for everything else.’

2. Keep hydrated when drinking

‘We can all get carried away on a bank holiday, with endless drinks parties or visits to the local pub.

‘But as lovely as it is to sit in the sun with a glass of wine, we all dread the hangover that will follow the day after a long period of drinking.

Gabriela, 42, who has an excellent track record in working with royals, also released a book last year during the pandemic called 2 Weeks to Feeling Great

‘One of the key causes of a hangover is dehydration, so I have a few small tips that stop me feeling awful the next day.

‘Firstly, never drink on an empty stomach… it’s important to have something to soak up the alcohol, and ideally you will have eaten a small amount of protein to keep your blood sugar levels balanced.

‘Secondly, I recommend a glass of water between every alcoholic drink, as not only will this keep you hydrated it will mean you drink less.

‘And lastly, I always advise my patients to put a bit of sparkling water and ice in their wine… this means that not only do they drink it more slowly, but it dilutes the drink down too.

3. Go for a long walk

‘I always recommend starting the day with a nice, brisk walk. I find that not only does it encourage you out of the house, it gets the blood pumping and helps to release some endorphins.

‘Even if the weather isn’t great, it’s important to get the oxygen flowing around your bloodstream.

‘It helps to make you feel like you’ve achieved something with the day – even if you spend the rest of the day on the sofa.

‘I appreciate that after an evening of excess this might be the last thing that you want to do, but I promise, you’ll always feel better after a long walk!

‘With these long weekends, it can be tempting to become sedentary and lazy, but forcing yourself out there will really pay off.

‘The increased oxygen in your blood will make you feel rejuvenated.’

4. Get enough sleep

‘It’s hard to overestimate the importance of sleep, as this will impact not only your mental health, but your bodies functions, too.

‘Tiredness can send your cravings wild, meaning you’re more likely to eat unhealthy food. It also suppresses cell regeneration and causes low energy.

‘My top tip is setting a time before you head out that you’d like to be in bed – and stick to it.

‘It can feel impossible to tear yourself away from a party, or stay for “just one” more drink… but I promise, you’ll thank yourself in the morning.

‘Making time for sleep will ensure you feel rejuvenated and fresh, and increase your energy during the day.’

5. Choose your recovery meals carefully

‘It’s all too tempting to stuff your face with leftovers when you’re feeling hungover, but your cravings should not be trusted.

‘The key is to ensure you are putting the correct fuel in your body.

‘A mixture of proteins and carbs is what you need to help you on your way. Normally, I’d recommend two boiled eggs with smoked salmon on dark rye bread.

‘Perhaps adding an avocado to give your body good quality fats.

‘Wash it down with a green juice, which should help to replenish the anti-oxidants you’ve taken out of your body from the night before! This is both delicious and will help you recover more efficiently.’

6. Have fun

‘My most important tip for the Jubilee weekend is simple – enjoy yourself! Make sure that you spend time with loved ones, enjoy their company, eat good food and have some fun.

‘Life is about creating good memories. I am a huge advocate for balance, and if you overindulge on the long weekend, don’t beat yourself up.

‘You can revert back to being healthy the next week.’
