Did Prince Harry make the dysfunctional situation with Meghan, Duchess of Sussex and her family worse? The book Finding Freedom claims that a small comment Harry once made about her family could have been perceived as him throwing shade.

Prince Harry commented on Meghan Markle’s first Christmas with the royal family

In the new book Finding Freedom, authors Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand claim that Prince Harry’s comment about Meghan’s family “added fuel” to the tension she was already experiencing with her estranged family members.

The small detail came when Prince Harry was asked about Meghan’s first royal Christmas at Sandringham in 2017.

When Prince Harry spoke with BBC Radio 4’s Today program that year, he was asked how Meghan’s first Christmas with the royal family went over and his response was quite positive.

The Finding Freedom authors believe that Prince Harry might have made a small dig about Meghan’s family that “added fuel to the extended Markle clan’s anger and feeling of insignificance” after Meghan distanced herself further from some family members.

Meghan Markle couldn’t comment on her family tension

Of course, Meghan’s family dysfunction has played out very publicly, with her father Thomas, half-brother Thomas Jr., and half-sister Samantha, who have all sold stories to the press about the duchess.

“Meanwhile, Harry couldn’t believe how badly Meghan’s family were behaving,” the authors write (via Express). “It was hard for him to watch the effects on his fiancée.”

“She was frustrated and angry and the things Samantha and Thomas Jr. were selling to the papers,” the writers note. “Even more frustrating was the fact that she couldn’t just throw out a statement or jump on Twitter to defend herself.”

Scobie and Durand continue, “She had to stay quiet while they attacked her.”

Prince Harry’s interview response may have been revealing

Though he didn’t say anything explicitly about Meghan’s family members, the authors believe that Prince Harry’s response about their royal holiday could have “heightened the already tenuous dynamic” with Meghan’s family.

“In addition to interviewing President Obama and his father, Harry offered his analysis on Meghan’s first royal Christmas, which he called ‘fantastic,’” the authors note.

During the interview, Prince Harry said, “She really enjoyed it. The family loved having her there. There’s always that family part of Christmas, there’s always that work element as well. And I think together we had an amazing time.”

“We’ve got one of the biggest families that I know of, and every family is complex as well,” he added. “She has done an absolutely amazing job, just getting in there. And it’s the family, I suppose, that she’s never had.”

“With this statement about the family ‘she’s never had,’ the prince added fuel to the extended Markle clan’s anger and feeling of insignificance now that Meghan had entered a totally different realm of society,” the authors claim.

Scobie and Durand add, “Harry’s comment on Today highlighted the already tenuous family dynamic and foreshadowed what was to come.”
